Language Specialists

We are looking to recruit language specialists with excellent spoken and written skills in Mandarin, Arabic and European languages.  Please note that if you have applied to us before, we will not consider a new application within two years of your previous submission.
If you wish to apply for the above position, please do read the Eligibility page to check our requirements.  When ready to proceed, please click on the Apply button above.
As an agency collecting intelligence from all over the world in many different languages and dialects, we couldn't operate without our teams of talented linguists. Working primarily from London, they have the chance to use their language skills day in, day out, translating raw material from both written and spoken sources. It's both fascinating and rewarding. Fascinating, as you will be working with subject matters that lie at the heart of world events. Rewarding, as you will be the person making intelligence accessible to people throughout the Service.
Throughout your career, you'll also have the chance to get involved in other activities, which might include interpreting, role-playing for training courses, carrying out foreign language website research and using your expertise to help other Government agencies. There may also be opportunities for those with the appropriate skills to assist with special operations overseas or to train others in their specialist languages.

Our partners

MI5 and MI6 work closely together with the Government Communications Headquarters ((GCHQ).  You may also wish to visit their website to find out about their Mandarin Chinese vacancies.
Please note, you may also apply for more than one Mandarin Chinese role within the intelligence agencies simultaneously.  You should be aware, however, that the three agencies use the same language tests for Mandarin Chinese vacancies. Therefore, if you are invited to language testing, your test results will be shared amongst the three agencies. You will only take one test.
Please note that if you are unsuccessful at the language testing stage of your application to one of the three agencies, you will not be eligible to reapply for Mandarin Chinese vacancies at SIS, GCHQ or MI5 within a 12-month period.
