Operations Manager Education


The overall mission of the NGO NiƱos de Guatemala (NDG) is to help build a better future for Guatemala. NDG aims to do this through providing Guatemalan disadvantaged children and adults with education and opportunities to develop themselves. NDG has three golden principles at the heart, which hold the future of the organization, and which makes it so unique: self-sufficiency, local community and education. To achieve this, NDG consists of three units: 1) The school and community center ’Escuela Urbana Mixta Nuestro Futuro’, located in Ciudad Vieja,and the second school located in San Lorenzo El Cubo ´El Porvenir´ 2) the Volunteer Centre in Antigua and 3) the NGO as the umbrella organization. To continue its work, NDG is looking for an Operations Manager Education for 40 hours per week for our two primary schools.
Job Description
The main goal of the Operations Manager Education is to give direction to operations and to advise and coach the teams of Nuestro Futuro and El Porvenir in order to prepare the units for organizational self-sufficiency in the near future. The Operations Manager will be supervised by the General Manager of NDG GT. This position will be starting preferably on June 1st 2013.
Responsibilities
  • Support and advise the management team of Nuestro Futuro and El Porvenir on operational matters
  • Develop (year) plans, ensure proper monthly reporting and monitor and evaluate progress accordingly
  • Oversee the 2 school´s annual budgets and financial expenditures
  • Provide support in contracting new personnel and managing current staff
  • Steer and maintain the course of the schools relative to (1) the overall strategy, (2) the long-term goals and (3) the culture, identity and values of NDG
  • Manage the unit with an adaptive style, focused on improving management capacity.

  • Coach towards operational independency
  • Maintain a professional culture and positive working atmosphere focused on teamwork, assertive communication, and shared responsibilities. Stimulate the proactive attitude towards learning and capacity building (incl. English proficiency, use of internet, trainings etc) of the staff of both schools
  • Initiate, coordinate and supervise projects:
  • Take lead of the research and implementation plan of a possible new middle school beginning in 2015
  • Give direction to the set-up and development of community projects (i.e. water filter program, job support for families, home improvement projects, school garden).
  • Supervise the Project Coordinator at El Porvenir.
  • Coordinate a Monitoring and Evaluation Project
  • Ad-hoc projects.
  • Network with other organizations, potential donors, coordinate special focus groups (e.g  local Rotary Service Club, local government, suppliers, US medical groups visits, etc)
  • Member of the Management Team of NDG Guatemala, working together with the fundraising department, HR and Finance, reporting to the General Manager

Requirements for the job
  • (Young) professional with experience in the field of management, planning and HR / capacity building and ability to guide and delegate competencies
  • Adaptive management and intercultural, communication skills; experience in managing cultural differences
  • Dedication to NDG’s mission and oriented to its goals
  • Excellent command of Spanish and English
  • A responsible and independent work attitude
  • Preferably experience in the field of international development in Latin America
  • Preferably experience in the field of education
  • At least twelve months available for full-time activities in Antigua Guatemala starting June 2013
