LEGAL DEPARTMENT
The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB/the Bank) is seeking to recruit an experienced legal professional as Deputy General Counsel (DGC) to assist the General Counsel in providing strong leadership, effective management and oversight of the Bank’s Legal Department.   The successful candidate will be based at CDB’s office in St. Michael, Barbados.
CDB is a regional multilateral development bank which was established in October 1969 to contribute to the harmonious economic growth and development of the member countries in the Caribbean Region and to promote economic cooperation and integration among them, having special and urgent regard to the needs of the less-developed members of the Region.  CDB began operations in January 1970 and has become a leading catalyst for providing development financing, technical assistance and policy advice to its Borrowing Member Countries (BMCs) for the reduction of poverty.
The Role
The DGC reports to the head of the Legal Department, the General Counsel, and is responsible for assisting the General Counsel in the efficient management of the Department and for guiding lawyers in the Department, with a view to ensuring that CDB’s interests are protected and its activities are conducted in accordance with its policies, rules and procedures.
                                                                                                                   
The Candidate
Eligible candidates should:
  • Be a qualified Attorney-at-law, Barrister or Solicitor as evidenced by relevant qualification and ability to practice in one or more of CDB’s member countries.
  • Have a post-graduate degree in law or a degree in another discipline relevant to CDB’s work. Substantial knowledge of, or experience with, the constituent instruments, policies and procedures of an MDB would be an advantage.
  • Have at least twelve years’ working experience in the practice of law in the private and/or public sector in one or more of CDB’s member countries, with at least six years mentoring or guiding a team.   Working experience in the practice of law in one or more of CDB’s BMCs would be an advantage.
  • Have a general law practice, with experience in the negotiation and preparation of documentation with respect to matters relevant to CDB’s operations including project finance, corporate matters, international borrowings, including private placements, swaps and other derivatives, and international loan agreements, as well as familiarity with treaties and international institutions, would be desirable.
  • The successful candidate must be willing to live and work in Barbados.
