East Malling Research (EMR) is an independent provider of top-class research, development and consultancy serving the food chain, with particular emphasis on perennial horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment. EMR’s team of scientists integrate their knowledge of breeding and molecular genetics, genomics, post and disease biology and management, crop and post-harvest physiology, agronomy, environmental science, food product development and consumer research, to address both strategic and industry issues.
Tree Physiologist
EMR aims to be recognised as the pre-eminent research institution in the UK for strategic and applied research, development and innovation in horticulture. Building on our significant international reputation, we wish to appoint a tree physiologist who will progress our scientific understanding of the hormonal regulation of fruit tree architecture, tree water relations and response to abiotic stresses, the hormonal regulation of flowering and fruit set, and the effects of pre-harvest factors on fruit quality attributes. The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist with an ability to draw on a wide range of sciences including physiology, biochemistry and genetics.
The successful candidate will be expected to innovate and actively seek their own research funding, whilst developing collaborative contacts both nationally and internationally. Communication via peer-reviewed publications, at conferences and in talks to the fruit-growing industry will be essential.
The appointment is expected to be in Pay Band 6, £26,047 – 30,027 with salary dependent on experience and relevant qualifications; appointment at a higher band could be available for more experienced researchers. 25 days annual leave plus 8 days public holidays, pleasant working environment and eligibility to join the USS pension scheme upon appointment.
