Technical Expert (m/f)
Agricultural development and soil and water engineering in Sub-Saharan Africa
“Green” topics are gaining increasing significance in development cooperation (DC) with Africa. Biodiversity, forestry protection, irrigation, rural development … our portfolio in this area is constantly growing. If you’re excited by the prospect of playing a major role in helping to shape this growth from an agricultural perspective, and you’re keen to put your know-how to active use in appraising and implementing development cooperation projects, then join our team in Frankfurt am Main where you’ll be made more than welcome.
Your main areas of focus here will be agricultural and rural development including irrigation and soil and water conservation. You will put planned projects under the microscope. Is the proposed technical solution appropriate and sustainable? Have economic, environmental and climate aspects been given adequate consideration? Where do the potential risks lie, and how can they be minimised? You keep yourself very well informed on current developments in our partner countries and state-of-the-art agricultural development methods, and you know just which parameters should be examined. Naturally you will be engaged not just in project assessment and development of concepts, but remain actively involved throughout project implementation. You are required to function as a technical specialist and advisor, a problem-solver who understands how to get to grips with issues as they arise and follow them through to conclusion. At times you will also be required to serve as a project manager, using proactive management techniques to ensure that the project comes in on time, on budget, and to specification. It goes without saying that you will also visit site regularly to keep a close eye on projects implemented by our partners. We will rely on your specialist input not only to develop our portfolio, but also in other areas - both speciality-specific and inter-disciplinary - such as the awarding of contracts, quality assurance and training.
Your profile: A degree in agricultural science, preferably related to tropical agriculture and soil and water engineering, has been your starting point. You have gained broad experience in the agricultural and rural development sector in developing countries particularly in Africa. Project design and economic analysis, project management, implementation and evaluation are familiar territory to you. You combine a good knowledge of operational practice with an adequate understanding of procedures and financial instruments used in financial cooperation. You win others over by means of your intercultural skills, your negotiating abilities and your communication strengths – in English and French. Working knowledge of German is a must. You value inter-disciplinary teamwork, and you are able to present complex subjects in a concise and convincing manner to your audience. If you also have the capability to mediate successfully between different interests and to tackle critical issues and situations in a self-confident, solution-oriented manner, we will be delighted to hear from you.
