The Data Protection Act is rarely out of the headlines these days, whilst the Freedom of Information Act is often involved in creating them. The BBC's Information Policy and Compliance team advises the BBC on both of these key areas. Part of the Legal department within the central Operations Group, we provide professional guidance to all BBC divisions and companies to ensure their compliance with the DPA and FOI Acts, and other related legislation. The legal and compliance challenges in this arena are as varied as they are important. Balancing between journalism and data protection, protecting individuals personal data in an increasingly complex online world and making sure the BBC is as open as possible.

Role

As Senior Advisor, Data Protection you'll oversee the processes that ensure the BBC remains compliant with the DPA and related or successor legislation. Reviewing the BBC’s policies, ensuring they are up to date and appropriate, as well as drafting and implementing new policies where needed. While your primarily concern will be the management of compliance processes, policy review, projects and training across the BBC, you will also oversee, and occasionally deliver, training and communication programmes in the area.

Requirements

You'll have a minimum of 6 years in a policy, legal, or a senior broadcasting management role, Lawyers with 4 years PQE and other relevant experience may be considered. As expected, you'll have significant knowledge of the Data Protection Act and other legislation and standards (e.g. RIPA Act, Human Rights Act, IS017799) and experience of influencing key decision makers e.g. divisional board members, programme-makers, HR professionals. In addition you'll have experience of managing complex or multi-disciplinary projects and experience of managing a diverse workload to tight deadlines.
