The person and the job:
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks an enthusiastic and experienced Director, Human Resources, to provide overall, strategic human resources leadership to the organization and contribute to Center-level initiatives emerging from the Institute’s strategy and operational plans. Reporting to the Director General and based at IWMI’s headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, you will ensure the development and implementation of global best practices in human resource management to complement the Institute’s new, emerging strategy. You will develop, review and update the human resources strategy and human resource management policies, systems and practices, which include staff resourcing, contract management, compensation, performance management, organizational development, Human Resource Information System (HRIS), employee relations and personnel administration. You will lead the Human Resources team to provide proactive, results-oriented services.
You will:
• lead human resource practices and objectives that provide an employee-oriented, high performance culture which emphasizes empowerment, quality, productivity and standards, goal attainment, and the recruitment and ongoing development of a superior workforce;
• foster a workplace environment and culture consistent with IWMI’s values and mission;
• develop a human resource strategy and policy that reflects IWMI’s strategy and plans;
• coordinate the implementation of quality services, policies and programs through Human Resources (HR) staff;
• direct and manage timely and appropriate performance management processes in conjunction with senior colleagues;
• coordinate IWMI’s talent management processes, training and development activities, and ensure succession planning for future staffing;
• ensure mitigation of risk in IWMI’s activities within HR;
• advise and guide managers across IWMI’s offices about human resource management issues; and
• be a member of IWMI’s senior management team.
You must possess:
• academic attainment at master’s degree level, preferably in human resource management, business administration or related studies;
• at least 15 years’ experience in a senior HR management position, preferably in an international organization and/or the non-profit sector;
• excellent competence in the core HR disciplines, with experience in change management and organizational development;
• a demonstrated track record in designing and implementing human resource strategies, policies, systems and practices, and in finding creative solutions to human resources issues;
• an excellent command of English, both written and spoken;
• strong leadership and management skills to efficiently manage human resources and administrative matters;
• excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be a strong team player;
• strong negotiation and advocacy skills appropriate to interact effectively with people at all levels in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment; and
• strategic planning skills with sound analytical ability and good judgment.

• are conversant with the latest information technology, especially in HRIS development;
• have proven diplomatic, deal-making and influencing skills;

This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
