Overview
The World Resources Institute is seeking a full time Associate to coordinate Global Forest Watch activities in South America. GFW is a new interactive, online forest monitoring system that unites satellite imagery, cloud computing, and crowd-sourced data to create never-before-possible transparency in forests around the world. The Associate will be responsible for leading GFW's engagement with major stakeholders in the region including the government, private sector and civil society organizations. The position will report to the Latin America Manager for GFW and will be part of a larger international team based in Washington, D.C. seeking to cultivate the GFW2.0 platform and support its use by governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and communities around the world. Responsibilities
  • Work with the Latin America Manager developing and leading the engagement of major stakeholders (government, private sector, civil society organizations, academia) in South America who are potential users of GFW;
  • Represent the initiative to partners and stakeholders in the region;
  • Work closely with GFW's existing partners to identify and pilot applications of the GFW system for crowd-sourcing or community monitoring;
  • Co-manage the implementation of GFW's small-grants program to local civil society organizations;
  • Identify and advance new lines of research and analysis relevant to the initiative's strategy, and work with the Latin American Manager to implement these activities;
  • Produce, review, and edit communications materials, and other written outputs consistent with WRI's high standard of quality;
  • Support fundraising activities and other duties.
Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in international relations, environmental studies or other relevant field. Other academic disciplines may be suitable depending on work experience. Outstanding candidates with Bachelor's degree and significant work experience are also encouraged to apply;
  • Minimum 2 to 4 years of work experience in the region; experience working on themes related to the drivers of deforestation in the region desirable;
  • Experience working with environmental issues, especially forest and the drivers of forest change in the region;
  • Superb analytical and strategic thinking skills;
  • Knowledgeable and able to navigate cultural and geo-political sensitivities in the region;
  • Ability to write in an organized, clear, and articulate manner, in English and Brazilian Portuguese; Spanish is also desirable;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and compellingly to a wide range of audiences both national and international;
  • Results focused, with a strong team orientation, and the ability to work well under pressure;
  • Commitment to WRI's mission and institutional values;

Salary and benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience and skills. The position is full time and will be for a period of one year, including a three-month probationary period, renewable upon satisfactory performance. The start date is as soon as possible.
