Director of Technology
UP Education Network is a nonprofit school management organization whose mission is to rapidly transform chronically underperforming district schools into extraordinary schools that sustain high achievement over time. Our turnaround schools ensure that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and strength of character necessary to succeed on the path to college and to achieve their full potential. UP Education Network currently operates four schools, UP Academy Charter School of Boston (grades 6-8), UP Academy Leonard Middle School (grades 6-8), UP Academy Charter School of Dorchester (grades K1-5), and UP Academy Oliver (grade 6). Across our network, we will serve more than 2500 students in Boston and Lawrence in fall 2014.
Role: UP Education Network's Director of Technology will develop and lead a new service delivery model that involves providing centralized technology support services to staff at our network of five schools and to staff at the network home office. The Director of Technology will provide direct, on the ground technology support and services to roughly 40 home office staff members, and will manage a Technology Coordinator who is responsible for providing on the ground technology support for the leadership teams and staff working in our schools. The Director of Technology will oversee the implementation of a work order management system to ensure that IT issues are being resolved in a timely manner, and will develop and manage systems improvement initiatives to ensure that all school-based and home office-based staff receives timely and high quality IT support. As the leader of the Technology Team, the Director of Technology will also be responsible for leading strategic planning and regular performance reviews of the Technology Team and will be the main liaison with district technology staff. S/he will partner with district staff and with school leaders to develop and execute technology initiatives that improve technology performance across the network. The Director of Technology will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and will be a member of the organization's Operations Department.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Ensure all staff and classroom technology equipment are set-up and deployed in a timely manner each summer;
  • Develop network wide technology standards and technology trainings designed to ensure such standards are widely adopted;
  • Perform regular maintenance on home office staff laptops and hardware defined by network technology standards;
    • Develop systems and processes to ensure that the Technology Team provides effective and efficient IT support and technology services to home office staff and our schools, including developing and managing a work order management system;
    • Regularly review data on IT support services and technology performance across the network, and identify opportunities to improve performance;
    • Conduct strategic planning for the Technology Team, including developing a strategy to ensure the network can continue provide high-quality technology services to its home office staff and schools in an environment of rapid growth;
    • Manage the network's shared server system, and work with the Chief Operating Officer to develop and execute a strategy for ensuring a suitable shared server system is in place as the network grows;
    • Manage the Technology Coordinator, and ensure s/he is providing effective oversight of the network's email system;
    • Perform other duties related to this job description as required by the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Serve as the main point of contact with district CTOs and partner with districts to identify ways to improve technology performance in our schools;
  • Work with the Directors of Operations at each school to develop and implement long-term technology projects; and

  • Bachelor's degree is required;
  • At least three to five years of experience in technical support required; and
  • Current authorization to work in the United States – A candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.
