Bookkeeper

The Environmental Law Institute seeks an energetic, self-starting, highly motivated individual to be the Bookkeeper.
The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the leading center of environmental research, policy, analysis, and training in the United States. Founded in 1969, ELI plays a pivotal role in the evolution of environmental law, management, and policy both in the United States and abroad. Support for the Institute comes from a mix of law firm, corporate, government, academic, and individual members as well as grants from private foundations, companies, and government agencies.
The Bookkeeper supports the accounting function primarily with transaction entry, payroll processing and related reconciliations. The Bookkeeper reports to the Director of Finance but works closely with the Accounting Manager and Project Accountant.
Duties Include:
  • Process semi monthly payroll and reconcile labor and paid time off totals
  • Prepare journal entries to record receipts, prepare and make bank deposits
  • Process invoices for payment and prepares weekly check runs
  • Prepare monthly accrual journals
  • Record and reconcile monthly credit card statements
  • Prepare spreadsheets to support, track and reconcile various entries and accounts
  • Prepare for year-end audit, including reconcile and true various liability and revenue accounts
The qualifications for the ideal candidate for this position include:
  • Bachelor's Degree with college courses in accounting or business preferred
  • Strong computing and technology skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel software
  • Experience with computerized accounting software; Solomon (MS Dynamics) preferred
  • Ability to work well with others under deadline situations and respond to changes in priorities
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills and keen critical thinking and organizational skills
  • Strong service orientation and appreciation of ELI's mission to make law work for people, places, and the planet
