Director of Communications and New Media

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) is a 501c(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to securing diagnosis of celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders and improving quality of life for those on a lifelong gluten-free diet.
The Director of Communications and New Media is the driving force behind NFCA's communications and marketing strategies, tasked with communicating the organization's mission, goals, values and strategies and ensuring that those strategies are aligned with all program goals and initiatives and can demonstrate impact using a variety of methodologies and tools. Position reports to Vice President and manages Communications Assistant and consultants.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Engage key collaborators and stakeholders, both internal and external, to promote NFCA brand, mission and program initiatives within a variety of sectors. Direct internal and external communication strategy utilizing compelling messaging for target audiences. Oversee web, social media and public relations strategies. Responsible for development, execution and quality control of all public and industry facing marketing assets and for understanding and delivering constituent insights.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Build brand identity and ensure brand is compelling and accurately communicated throughout all public-facing vehicles. Identify brand champions and build relationships that promote NFCA's brand prominence and exposure. Manage brand guidelines and ensure appropriate use of brand elements.
  2. Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan that supports NFCA's program strategies and sets annual, measurable goals that ensure communications initiatives are demonstrating impact on target audiences.
  3. Oversee web and social media presence and manage relationships with associated vendors for website redesign and mobile optimization. Lead SEM (search engine marketing) function and use of best practices, including management of SEO, pay per click and Google Grant.
  4. Direct social media campaigns, ensuring growth on social media platforms. Identify and research new social media channels for potential use in NFCA marketing and outreach.
  5. Oversee design and development of all print and online material including brochures, sell sheets, printable guides, e-blasts, newsletters, ads, and annual report.
  6. Manage public relations firm to ensure that mainstream and specialized media are actively engaged, cultivated and tracked to ensure national and key market exposure and to strengthen NFCA's position as leading experts.
  7. Coordinate speaking submissions and presentations for national trade shows, conferences and events ensuring alignment with program or exposure objectives.
  8. Work with development director to coordinate development of effective fundraising appeals and support the communications needs of special events.
  9. Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, staff development and tracking fulfillment of sponsorship benefits as related to the deployment of communications assets.
  10. Drive constituent insights and market segmentation, ensuring that NFCA has an understanding of its audience, audience trends and successful tracking of communications results.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications or related field.
EXPERIENCE:
  • 8+ years of related communications or media relations experience with focus on team leadership and management, preferably at the national level.
Proven experience in planning, writing, editing and production of various print publications and online content.
  • Personal or professional engagement with healthcare industry and/or nonprofit sector
  • Experience managing consultants.
SKILLS:
  • Understanding of brand concepts and background executing and assessing brand strategy.
  • Firm understanding of media fundamentals, target audience development and communications strategies.
  • Sharp strategic thinking and effective problem solving skills, with ability for high level analysis and resilient decisonmaking.
  • Effective project and team management skills, decisively organizing multiple assignments for self, direct reports and wider team.
  • Strong writing skills with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to develop key messages on tight deadlines while ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  • Firm grasp of website management, analytics, content management and assessment
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced and innovative environment where multi-tasking is essential.
  • Ability to think and work creatively while translating medical jargon and statistics into user-friendly and compelling calls to action.
