The Aga Khan Foundation, based in Geneva, Switzerland (AKF, Geneva) is seeking an experienced Senior Health Programme Officer (SHPO) to work closely with management and staff of Foundation units in the developed and developing countries and with the health-related agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

The SHPO will report to the General Manager of AKF.

Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Serve as a regular member of the AKDN health team responsible for donor engagement in Health, and the health-related components of the Built Environment (BE), e.g. safe water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion;
  • Collaborate with those responsible for donor engagement to ensure discussions on Health programming across the Network are properly coordinated;
  • Participate in developing proposals for Health programmes and those for the health-related components of BE;
  • Review the preparation of new projects and programmes in Health and the health-related components of BE across the countries of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN);
  • Provide technical support to existing grants and track closely their implementation to ensure that the AKDN health partnerships with donors are being properly documented, analysed, and maintained after grants are secured;
  • Identify gaps in programming and coordinate the preparation of ongoing activities and the launch of innovative initiatives to adress the Health and the health-related aspects of BE across the Network; and
  • In collaboration with the AKF units in developed countries, keep abreast of donor trends in Health and the health-related aspects of BE to ensure that these trends are brought to the attention of the leadership of AKDN Health.
The ideal candidates will have the following profile:
  •  A health professional with at least seven years of experience and in-depth familiarity with the key themes in Global Health and the health-related aspects of BE.
  • Hold a Master's degree in Public Health and / or Public Administration / Public Policy.
  • Have excellent written and spoken English.  Knowledge of at least one other modern language is desirable.
  • Familiarity with health programming and country trends in health in Central and South Asia, East and West Africa and the Middle East is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in partnership development, resource mobilisation, grants management and a proven track record in donor engagement and securing resources for Health and the health-related aspects of BE is also required.
  • International donor agencies place a high value on having access to one coordinating mechanism that is located at a central level and is capable of providing clear and comprehensive information.  While not managing all aspects of programming in Health and the health aspects of BE, the Senior Health Programme Officer needs to have a comprehensive overview of AKDN's donor partnerships, including all of the stages of the partnership process, i.e, from resource mobilisation to grants management support to long-term relationship development.
