External Affairs has accountability for developing, maintaining and leveraging Rio Tinto's relationships with key stakeholders including governments, international bodies, academia, industry, non-government organisations, etc. Developing and managing relationships with key stakeholders is critical for Rio Tinto, particularly with respect to reputation, access and influence.

1 – Context
 
The External Affairs team focuses on managing government relations and other stakeholder relations for Rio Tinto, including industry bodies and NGOs. The team has multiple focal areas, including: supporting senior executives before and during interactions with UK and European stakeholders; identifying relevant engagement opportunities for Rio Tinto within the UK and Europe in order to raise awareness of Rio Tinto, responsible mining and key areas where Rio Tinto engages significantly (e.g. transparency and human rights); and tracking issues within the UK and Europe which may have an influence upon Rio Tinto’s global business.
 
 
2 – Accountabilities
 
The internship will give you an insight into the extractives and commodities sector and into how a global business operates. You will also enhance your understanding of topics such as government relations, commercial diplomacy and transparency.
 
Your role will entail the following:
  • Conducting research on key issues and markets (for example on political developments in Rio Tinto’s core markets)
  • Producing background briefings for senior executives ahead of meetings with stakeholders
  • Creating presentations for external stakeholders
  • Supporting the External Affairs team generally
  • Undertaking some administrative duties to support the team.
You will work both independently on research projects and as part of the team.
