The Rio Tinto Copper Group’s Integrated Skarns Project (ISP) is undertaking various studies and work to determine the viability of an underground mine which will exploit the skarn hosted copper mineralization identified near the pit at the Bingham mine.  The study work associated with designing and evaluating the potential future mine at ISP is the task of the Order of Magnitude team.
 
The opportunity
 
We are looking for a Mining Engineer - Underground Study, residentially based in the Salt Lake City, to join the Integrated Skarns Project study team and be accountable for underground mining and infrastructure design from surface through to delivery of ore to the mill. This work is a critical component of the study and includes developing and managing a mine design program and associated budget. In addition, you will also develop underground mine plans under the direction of the Principal Mining Engineer.
 
What the role entails
 
Reporting to the Principal Engineer - Mining, you will be responsible for:
  • Working on various project studies while assisting consultants with project scoping and planning to ensure they are operating at peak efficiency
  • Ensuring that the planned work complies with all applicable federal/state regulations as well as the safety policies and standards of Rio Tinto
  • Providing input and expertise needed by other team members in order to achieve group objectives particularly concerning underground mine planning
  • Partnering with Kennecott Utah Copper and North Rim Skarn (NRS) mine personnel and project engineers to solve problems
  • Managing work scopes and budgeted items undertaken by consulting firms
  • Developing an understanding of the fundamental value drivers and demonstrate rigor in making underground mine planning decisions
  • Utilizing necessary economic models to identify ore and evaluate value impacts of mine planning decisions
  • Traversing multiple disciplines including mining, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering
 What you will need for this role
 
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree in mining engineering or related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years of related experience in an underground setting
  • Experience with Vulcan, Mine 2-4D and ventilation simulation software (advantageous)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels
