European Union PhD Studentships in Multilingualism

University of Edinburgh -School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences

Deadline: Wednesday 30th April 2014
As part of a major EU grant for the research project "Advancing the European Multilingual Experience", funding is available for 3 full time PhD studentships in Linguistics and Psychology starting in September 2014.
The project as a whole will focus on an integrated approach to bilingualism, with a particular emphasis on regional/minority languages spoken by bilinguals at different stages of development and life. The Edinburgh portion of the project will investigate two strands of research. The successful applicant(s) for Strand 1 will use experimental psycholinguistic methods to investigate the interaction between bilingual knowledge (involving a minority language, specifically English/Gaelic and Italian/Sardinian bilinguals) and other cognitive functions. The successful applicant(s) for Strand 2 will use experimental psycholinguistic methods to investigate the impact of bilingualism on fundamental mechanisms of language processing in dialogue. The successful candidates and their supervisors will work together closely as a research group within the overall framework of the project.
Further general information on the project can be found on the European Commission CORDIS  site.
The successful candidates will be supervised by the Principal Investigators (Prof. Antonella Sorace, Prof. Holly Branigan, Prof. Caroline Heycock and Prof. Martin Pickering,). They will be affiliated to the Linguistics and English Language and/or Psychology subject areas of the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.
