Consultant, International Child Rights Expert

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights.
 
The ICJ, though its Brussels office (ICJ-European Institutions), is seeking a consultant with expertise on international mechanisms on safeguarding and promoting children’s rights to support its work on the rights of migrant children in seven EU countries.
 
Responsibilities 
 
For around 25-30 days spread across a period beginning in October 2016 and ending at the latest in March 2018, the consultant will:
 
  • Contribute to and advise on the preparation of training modules on the rights of the child, with a focus on using international human rights mechanisms, in particular the Optional Protocol 3 to the Convention on the Rights of the Child;
  • Participate as a trainer in at least one national training seminar on the rights of migrant children in a European country;
  • Advise on the preparation, conceptualization and design, and contribute to the delivery, of the strategic litigation workshop for lawyers which should take place in the second half of 2017.
 
Qualifications 
 
  • University degree in law. Further academic studies in international human rights law desirable;
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the international human rights law, in particular regarding the rights of the child;
  • Significant expertise on international human rights mechanisms relevant for safeguarding and promoting migrant children’s rights at global and European levels, especially the Optional Protocol 3 to the Convention on the Rights of the Child;
  • Experience in the development of training programmes and delivery of human rights training.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
