Under the supervision of the Director of the Division of Human Resources Management, the primary role of the incumbent is to advise the Agency, on the basis of his/her professional expertise and experience, on the design and development of an Organisational Health Policy in order to ensure that UNHCR staff members and their dependants remain healthy at their duty station, especially for those working and living in the field in remote areas.

The incumbent participates in regular medical meetings with other UN Directors/Medical Officers in order to share experiences, policies and methods of work for the benefit of the UNHCR staff.

Within UNHCR, the incumbent has daily contacts with all levels of UNHCR staff both in HQ and in the field. In addition, he/she has regular contacts with all UNHCR Directors of Bureaux and Representatives regarding the safety of their staff as well as with DHRM, DESS/EPRS, SWS, IGO, Mediator and Staff Council.

The external contacts are with medical colleagues of other UN organisations in Geneva (UNOG, WHO, ILO) as well as daily contacts with hospitals, clinics, treating physicians, international organisations (e.g. CICR, IFRC), non- governmental organisations (e.g. MSF, MDM), emergency medical assistance companies (International SOS) and regular contact with medical insurances (UNSMIS, MIP).
