Assistant Scientist - Ecology

The successful candidate shall conduct specific research aimed at advancing technical knowledge and solving problems in rodent and vertebrate science including the development of field (mainly) and laboratory studies, collection of field data, processing data and reporting. The successful applicant will be required to link with local rice farmers and with staff from local government units.

Major accountabilities/Responsibilities
• Designs and conducts experiments. Prepare materials and manage field experiments related to rodent biology and management; and other vertebrates (birds and amphibians). Must be able to relate well to farmers and government officials
• Participates in field studies and overseas operation of experimental activities and supervises the measurement and proper processing of animals (including CMR, wildlife surveys) and their body parts
• Interprets results and their significance using various scientific analyses and procedures
• Reviews and verifies data to ensure the validity of all results, contribute to writing-up activities to enable publication of the results
• Coordinates with IRRI experimental station, researchers and laboratory staff for the effective implementation of field and laboratory experiments
• Oversees the collection of wildlife permits and export permits, and is responsible for arranging all of the paperwork necessary for shipping of materials overseas

Qualification requirements
• BSc graduate of vertebrate ecology, wildlife conservation, or similarly related to animal sciences; MSc an advantage
• 4 years of relevant research experience with a strong field component
• Good organizational skills; able to write clearly; can work well within a team and supervise junior staff with confidence; good attention to detail; skilled at the use of word and data processing with computer programs; current driver’s license; ability to handle wild animals; ability to work long hours in the field, including some work at night; able to maintain field and laboratory equipment
