CEO/Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a multilateral institution for financing global environmental issues. Headquartered in Washington D.C., the GEF provides grants to developing countries and economies in transition for projects related to biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants. Since its inception in 1991, the GEF has committed USD $9.2 billion in grants to over 2,700 projects in more than 165 developing countries and transition economies. Its annual administrative budget is about $20M and it consists of a team of about 100 people.

The GEF seeks to appoint the CEO/Chairperson, effective 1 August 2012. The CEO is appointed to serve for four years on a full time basis by the Council. The CEO may be reappointed by the Council for one additional four year term.

The CEO/Chairperson leads the GEF Council (comprising 32 members), shapes the strategic direction, strengthens collaboration with member countries and partners, and manages the implementation of strategies and policies. The CEO/Chairperson is also responsible for overseeing the performance of the Secretariat. The CEO/Chairperson is the ambassador of the GEF, representing the organisation in global fora for sustainable development and the environment.

To be successful in this global leadership role, the GEF seeks a highly visionary leader capable of shaping the agenda, translating global direction into local action, and mobilizing partnerships and resources. The successful candidate will have strong experience in global environment issues, as well as in international development assistance. She/he should also be familiar with international environmental agreements. She/he will have shown leadership at the international level, as well as having demonstrated political judgment and an ability to think strategically in global governance structures. She/he will have excellent managerial and communication skills.
