The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, and welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 12 other countries. Head of Administration Division - m/f

Duties:
The ILL is a private Association governed by French civil law ("Société Civile"). It is funded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom : its shares are held by the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA) and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) for France, the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) for Germany, and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for the UK. Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, India, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland also belong as Scientific Members of the ILL. The ILL operates the world's leading neutron source, a high-flux neutron research reactor which is used to conduct experiments in the following scientific disciplines: structure and dynamics of condensed matter with applications in physics, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, materials science and engineering, as well as nuclear and elementary-particle physics.

The ILL is located on the EPN (European Photon and Neutron) science campus together with two other European laboratories : the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the Grenoble outstation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

You will be in charge of providing efficient administrative services and advice to the Directors and staff of the Institute, in the fields of human resource management, financial planning and accounting, purchasing, legal and contractual matters, building and site maintenance. You will lead a Division of 3 services and some 55 members of staff.

As a member of the Management Board (with the Director, the two Associate Directors and the Head of the Reactor Division), you will contribute proactively to the development of the overall policy and strategic planning of the Institute.

You will also be responsible for the secretariat of the ILL Steering Committee, of the Subcommitee on Administrative Questions and the Audit Commission.

Qualifications and experience:
You should have an appropriate professional qualification (economics, law, administration or other), and will also have:

  • substantial administrative and management experience within an international or national scientific institute or similar, and knowledge of the administrative, legal, financial and personnel procedures and practices within the Institute's member countries and the wider European context;
  • written and spoken fluency in at least two of the ILL's three languages (English, French, German) and a willingness to learn the third language;
  • the qualities of leadership and the management ability required to direct the work of the Administration Division in the service of the Institute;
  • excellent interpersonal and presentational skills.

You are willing to become familiar with the scientific missions of the Institute.

Fixed-term contract : 60 months

The contract is to begin early in 2012. Candidates seconded from another institute or university are welcome.
