JOB PURPOSE:

Building on the on-going work of the Campaign to End Fistula (http://www.endfistula.org/public/), which is present in 49 countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, Arab and Latin American/Caribbean Regions, the Technical Specialist, Obstetric Fistula (OF) provides technical assistance/advice for obstetric fistula, a major maternal morbidity, and supports the work of UNFPA and its Maternal Health Thematic Fund (MHTF) in this area, as part of a comprehensive approach to maternal health.

ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION:

The Technical Specialist, Obstetric Fistula is located in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch, Technical Division, and reports to the Technical Specialist, Obstetric Fistula/Coordinator of the Campaign to End Fistula.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Provide program guidance, training and support in the area of Obstetric Fistula (OF) to strengthen UNFPA capacity at Regional and Country levels in OF elimination particularly, and maternal mortality/morbidity reduction more broadly, including:

• Provide programme guidance and support, Country Office (CO) and Regional Office (RO) staff including Fistula Focal Points (FFPts): - Contribute to organization and hosting of training for CO and RO staff - Contribute to improving information flow and communications between FFPts from HQ, Regional Office (RO), Sub Regional Office (SRO) CO levels and vice versa

• Support country programs in implementation of programme guidance, including the Obstetric Fistula Orientation Note (MHTF 2011) within national health plans

B. Ensure the effective functioning of the global Secretariat for the Campaign to End Fistula, including the International Obstetric Fistula Working Group (IOFWG), comprised of over 50 national and international partners agencies and 100+ members

  • Support coordination of the IOFWG as required, eg organization of meetings and technical working groups;support to 5 Sub-working group discussions/activities of the IOFWG
  • Contribute to the development of partnerships from different sectors
  • Participate in meetings of the IOFWG

C. Report on and monitor fistula activities and achievements

  • Ensure timely production and analysis of required reports, including preparing performance-based and results-driven annual and other reports on OF as part of thematic fund reporting, documenting specific achievements, and making recommendations for follow-up actions
  • Assist in compiling Campaign to End Fistula key documents and communications, including newsletters, working closely with and assisting as appropriate the Global Campaign communications colleagues
  • Contribute to and consolidate UNFPA CO reports to donors
  • Serve as UNFPA focal point for the global fistula mapping exercise (involving nearly 60 UNFPA COs, plus multiple external partners)
  • Contribute to track work plan implementation and progress of fistula activities
  • Assist in mid-year and year end work plan reviews and help summarize lessons learned to improve MHTF performance

D. Contribute to knowledge sharing and knowledge generation on OF and maternal health

  • Actively seek out innovative approaches and new developments in the area of maternal health, particularly related to the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula
  • Establish and maintain mechanisms for knowledge sharing, including serving as focal point for the management of the technical tab of the www.endfistula.org website (technical information sharing portal), organizing meetings on technical areas, facilitating interactions utilizing information technology and supporting countries to document their lessons learned
  • Review and analyze the evidence base and disseminate State of the Art user-friendly publications and guidelines on effective programming strategies for the elimination of obstetric fistula/maternal mortality and morbidity reduction including translation into different regional contexts and emergency settings

E. Research support and follow-up

  • Review and support the research agenda for OF, including follow up and regular up-dates with Johns Hopkins University for the Multi-country Fistula Study, and linking with partners including EngenderHealth and others
  • Contribute to the initiation of research with partners in areas where the evidence base is lacking

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Advanced university degree in Public Health or Social Science or related field • At least 5 years of experience in the area of international development including public health, preferably sexual and reproductive health; knowledge and experience on Obstetric fistula an asset • Ability to translate technical guidelines into programming steps in resource-poor settings and across different contexts • Excellent writing abilities, with strong analytical skills • Experience working in a developing country is preferred • UNFPA/United Nations experience and familiarity desirable • Proficiency in English and French
