Project Coordinator for People Engagement in the MENA region Transparency International (TI)

Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Through more than 90 chapters worldwide and an international secretariat in Berlin, Germany, TI raises awareness of the damaging effects of corruption and works with partners in government, business and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.

The recent developments in the MENA region have opened up unprecedented opportunities for working with civil society and other stakeholders. TI has developed a programme of citizens’ empowerment that will exploit all the momentum and forward thrust which now exist in the MENA region. A key element of this programme is the promotion of youth integrity targeting youth and the community particularly through social media, with the aim of providing them with the tools that on the one hand will allow them to actively participate in anti corruption work and on the other hand educate them vis - à - vis their own behaviour and becoming models of integrity for their peers and future generations.

Main functions:

Coordinate the development and smooth implementation of activities targeting the engagement and active participation of citizens in the MENA region to the fight against corruption. This requires ensuring the timely execution of day-to-day operation of the People Engagement component of the TI MENA Programme, including supporting National Chapters in the development of youth engagement activities, advocacy strategies, administration, financial management and reporting.

Location: TI-Secretariat, Berlin, Germany; with international travel

Starting date: 01.01.2012 or asap

Contract: 2 years (2012 to 2013) with possibility of extension to 2014

Staff level: PC

Key responsibilities:

  • Project management:
    • Ensure smooth preparation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of the TI MENA Programme activities related to People Engagement.
    • Assist the TI MENA Programme Coordinator with financial management of the programme and contribute to donor reporting.
    • Organize regional events and assist National Chapters in the organisation of national workshops and trainings for People Engagement.
    • Assist chapters in further developing relevant capacities where needed for People Engagement
  • Research oversight:
    • Provide coordination and support to TI National Chapters’ project teams on research and advocacy and facilitate expert advice on/quality assurance of research outputs developed by TI National Chapters.
  • Advocacy:
    • Identify relevant public and private stakeholders in the fight against corruption in the MENA region, work with other regions People Engagement coordinators, and negotiate formal partnerships on the international level (with a special focus on Youth and Women)
    • Support chapter in the development of a national level advocacy plans for People Engagement.
  • People Engagement:
    • Support National Chapters in the establishment of a network of youth volunteers.
  • Programme Development:
    • Coordinate/ liaise with the TI-S People Engagement Programme and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the People Engagement activities are in line with the TI Strategy 2015 Priorities 1 (People) and 4 (Values).
    • General thematic and cross-regional cooperation with respect to the development of People Engagement aspects within the TI Movement

Knowledge, experience and skills:

  • University/post graduate degree (or equivalent qualification) in political science, sociology or other relevant field
  • 3 to 5 years’ relevant work experience (in NGOs, international organisations, private sector, etc) preferably in people engagement related work, with a special emphasis on Youth
  • Experience overseeing the implementation of citizens´ mobilisation / advocacy projects
  • Excellent project development, project management and coordination skills
  • Excellent budget management skills
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of the MENA region
  • Knowledge of, or considerable interest in, the work of TI and the field of anti-corruption skills
  • Proven hands on experience working on youth issues
  • Fluency in English; working knowledge of Arabic and French is an advantage.
  • Highly developed team work and intercultural communication skills
  • Willingness to regularly travel across the MENA region
