Veterinarian Veterinarians without Borders-Canada

SCOPE OF ROLE
The post holder is self-motivated and driven. A team player, s/he willingly shares her/his expertise and recognizes the value of team members’ and communities’ ideas and knowledge. S/he is committed to using participatory approaches to meet the needs of project partners and beneficiaries. S/he is willing to learn and adapt to new circumstances and apply this learning to try different project approaches.

The post holder has significant large animal experience and has preferably spent time working in tropical/developing country settings. S/he is able to provide vet services in resource-constrained conditions and train others in a range of veterinary and husbandry skills.

OBJECTIVES OF PLACEMENT
Help improve community livelihoods and food security. Specifically:
a) Build the capacity of Primary Animal Health Workers (PAHWs) to provide basic animal healthcare services in their communities
b) Develop and supervise livelihoods activities, including poultry production
c) Help make links to human and environmental health issues such as nutrition and hygiene, and build sustainability of project interventions

DUTIES
• Work with VWB Manager, Project Coordinators and other partners and colleagues to plan and implement project activities and budgets in a collaborative manner
• Provide local volunteer Primary Animal Health Workers (PAHWs) with regular support and guidance through livestock clinics, village mentoring and other training activities tailored to their learning needs
• Provide technical support in animal health to local partners
• Help plan, manage, evaluate and expand livelihoods initiatives including a poultry improvement and production scheme
• Monitor and evaluate project activities and outcomes through action-based learning using relevant monitoring and evaluation (M&E) methods
• Formalise a process for PAHW skills assessment and develop PAHW learning objectives for project duration
• Support other project initiatives such as Community Health Days and smartphone testing and usage
• Communicate regularly with local partners and with VWB colleagues and report on activities and outcomes
• Help coordinate logistics for project supplies and identify project support needs
• Help supervise volunteers and junior staff as appropriate
• Help build project sustainability and inter-sectoral linkages
• Contribute to VWB’s long term strategy in Laos through project expansion, identification of communities and need, and building relationships with stakeholders

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Required
• Degree in veterinary medicine
• Experience in food animal medicine
Preferred
• Experience as an adult educator/trainer
• Experience/qualifications in tropical veterinary medicine
• Experience working or volunteering in developing countries
• Experience in veterinary public health and/or involvement in health and environment issues
• Experience in project management and evaluating results
