CTFK Associate Director of Tobacco Industry Accountability


SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) has been designated as one of five coordinating partners for the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use – a global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low and middle-income countries where more than two-thirds of the world’s smokers live. As part of the Bloomberg Initiative, the Campaign has established a global advocacy resource center to provide accurate public information about tobacco use and effective tobacco control interventions and to assist advocates with resources and technical assistance to achieve policy change. These resources include advocacy, research, communications, and legal expertise and support.  
The Associate Director of Tobacco Industry Accountability, International Project will oversee the development and implementation of advocacy work to monitor, expose, prevent and counter tobacco industry interference in tobacco control policy.  Working as a part of the Campaign’s international team, the Associate Director will develop an overall strategy to prepare and assist partners and grantees in low- and middle-income countries to combat tobacco industry attempts to prevent the adoption and implementation of strong and effective policy and regulation of its activities.   
The Associate Director will work closely with a multi-disciplinary Tobacco Industry Accountability team to design effective campaign strategies and tactical responses to industry activity. The Associate Director is responsible for ensuring that the programs and activities of the Tobacco Industry Accountability International Project fully support and are consistent with the core mission, strategies, and activities of the overall international program by providing strategic advice and technical assistance to country and regional teams in priority countries around the world.   
This position reports to the Director of International Research.  

PRIMARY DUTIES
The Associate Director will be responsible for:
·         Setting the overall strategic vision for the global tobacco industry accountability work, creating innovative and proactive approaches to counter industry tactics and discredit the industry as a stakeholder in policy discussions; 
  • Coordinating the work of the Tobacco Industry Accountability team, ensuring the development of effective work plans to support country-based activities and responding to requests for technical assistance;
·         Supporting the development and implementation country-specific proactive tobacco industry strategies  to expose, counter and delegitimize the tobacco industry; 
·         Articulating, monitoring and overseeing global and multi-country projects aimed at addressing the industry activities;
·         Building the capacity of tobacco control advocates to develop and implement effective strategies to discredit and undermine the tobacco industry and counter its efforts to influence  tobacco control policy development;
·         Completing periodic reports, case studies, and analysis to document and disseminate best practices for combatting the industry;
·         Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with key partners in the Bloomberg Initiative and in regional work in Africa;
·         Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports describing Tobacco Industry Accountability work.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
·         Perform other duties as directed by the Director of International Research

REQUIREMENTS
  • Master in Public Health, Public Policy or related degree required.
·         Minimum five (5) years experience in developing, implementing, and overseeing policy advocacy campaigns.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry strategies and tactics to influence public health policy.  Preference to those with in-depth knowledge tobacco industry strategies and tactics used to delay, dilute or defeat such policies.
  • International experience in direct advocacy to expose, counter and discredit  industry efforts to influence public health policy, preference to those with experience countering the  tobacco industry.
  • Experience in providing technical assistance and building capacity of advocates with a wide range of competencies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of professionals.
·         Strong networking and communications skills, both written and spoken.
·         Proven capability of managing multiple projects effectively.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
·         Knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.
·         Foreign language proficiency one or more languages is a plus.
·         Ability to travel internationally.
