The Broker Managing editor


The Broker is an independent online platform on globalization and development, bringing together cutting-edge knowledge and expert opinions from researchers, policy makers and practitioners. The Broker acts as an intermediary between knowledge networks, ‘brokering’ global development knowledge to inform practitioners and policy makers and provide new and integrated perspectives on current global policy issues.
The Broker has a vacancy per 1 January 2013 for a Managing Editor m/f for 32 hours per week.
Background
The Broker is transforming itself from a magazine into an online think tank and virtual platform with continuous content production and online debates. It will focus on brokering between different academic disciplines and a wide variety of stakeholders (knowledge institutions and experts, policy makers in ministries, international organizations and NGOs, the business community) in a broad international field.
To function as an online network, The Broker needs to gather, maintain and interconnect up-to-date knowledge. These processes will also have to be closely coordinated and organized systematically.
The Broker is currently looking for an experienced managing editor with knowledge of this broad field of expertise, embracing both the academic and policy fields, and capable of coordinating production of the day-to-day content for The Broker website and social media.
The managing editor will contribute to the editorial course of The Broker, as expressed through the website, newsletters, dossiers, blogs and debates, and monitor the journalistic and substantive quality of these outputs. He/she will be responsible for pursuing a high-quality editorial programme, coordinating the activities of the editorial team and shaping the form and content of the production process. The managing editor will have daily leadership of the editorial team and report to the editor-in-chief/executive director.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Coordinating production of day-to-day content of The Broker website
• Selecting and leading the editorial team
• Drafting and monitoring compliance with planning
• Overseeing production of content: articles, blogs, newsletters and social media contributions.
• Overseeing moderation of online debates
• Supervising editorial activities to increase accessibility of texts
• Quality and process monitoring
• Coordinating and supervising social media contributions
Specific qualifications and experience
• Relevant working experience
• University degree in the social or political sciences
• Familiar with discussions on Dutch development policy
• Able to maintain and expand a broad international network
• Able to oversee and connect a broad array of networks and disciplines
• Journalistic experience
• A quick, sharp thinker, capable of analysing texts and their underlying structure
• Organizational talent: organized, practical, systematic
• Able to lead and motivate a team of editors and other staff members
• A team-worker
• Able to work under stress
• Good command of the English language
Conditions
• Location: Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
• This is a position for 32 hours per week.
• Salary in line with requirements for this position (in accordance with scale E of the collective labour agreement for professional magazines [CAO Vakbladen] for the position of managing editor) based on work experience.
• This is a position for 12 months, with a possibility for extension.
