UNESCO-IHE Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Hydrogeology and Groundwater Resources

The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education offers post-graduate education in Delft, The Netherlands, and carries out research and capacity building projects all over the world. The mission of UNESCO-IHE is to contribute to the education and training of professionals and to build the capacity of sector organizations, knowledge centres and other institutions active in the fields of water, the environment and infrastructure in developing countries and countries in transition.

UNESCO-IHE has a permanent staff of 180, of which 90 are scientific staff, while about 250 guest-lecturers from academia and industry contribute to the educational programme. Each year 750 participants (incl. about 200 new MSc students per year) from all over the world attend the various regular and short courses at UNESCO-IHE.

The Water Science and Engineering Department conducts research and provides post-graduate education and training to professionals in the fields of water resources assessment and control, hydraulic engineering, hydrology/hydrogeology, various fields related to aquatic ecosystems and limnology, irrigation and drainage, navigation and hydropower, port and coastal engineering, and floods, droughts and pollution. The department is organized into five scientific chair groups: 1) Hydrology and Water Resources, 2) Hydraulic Engineering – River Basin Development, 3) Land and Water Development, 4) Coastal Engineering and Port Development, and 5) Freshwater Ecosystems, each headed by a professor. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Hydrogeology and Groundwater Resources (m/f) – 1.0 Fte

Responsibilities

The new staff member will join the Hydrology and Water Resources (HWR) Chair group, which is primarily concerned with education and research to better understand hydrological processes, improve techniques for data monitoring and handling, and improve modelling of processes within the hydrological cycle including ecohydrological processes. The current staff of the HWR chair group anchors the teaching programme of a specialized MSc in Hydrology and Water Resources and leads research and capacity-development projects around the world.

The new staff member is expected to have his or her main expertise in the field of hydrogeology. Advanced skills in the characterization of groundwater systems, assessment of groundwater resources and groundwater modelling are required. More specific expertise is welcomed in a variety of areas, including interactions between surface water, groundwater, and the hyporheic zone; transient storage analysis in river corridors; transfer processes in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum; geophysical and tracer methods; and subsurface hydrochemistry. Candidates applying field-based observational and/or experimental approaches are especially encouraged to apply. The new staff member will have teaching responsibilities in his/her area of expertise and will be expected to supervise MSc and PhD students.

Requirements

• PhD degree in hydrogeology, or in a related field (e.g. civil engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences) ;
• expertise, research experience, and a record of peer-reviewed publications in hydrogeology;
• competency in project management and potential for new project and research grant acquisition;
• university teaching experience, preferably at the post-graduate level;
• participation in teaching, research and/or capacity building projects in developing countries and countries in transition is an asset;
• affinity to working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment;
• excellent command of the English language and preferably one additional international language such as Spanish or French; and
• willingness to frequently travel and work abroad for short and medium term assignments.

Terms of employment

This position is, in principle, a permanent one, however, the first contract offered is always temporary, and only after this period a permanent contract will be considered. The position is based in Delft, The Netherlands. A competitive salary (scale 10/12) is offered depending on qualifications and experience in accordance with the conditions of employment for Dutch Universities. The appointment implies entry into the Netherlands’ Civil Service Pension Fund (ABP). Candidates must be prepared to carry out long- and short-term missions abroad.
