Background of Fundraising and Communications at Merlin
The Marketing and Communications department was created in 2005 as a result of a strategic decision by Merlin to expand and develop its marketing and communication activities in order to significantly increase the amount of voluntary income raised by the charity and to communicate with a range of stakeholders. The department is a totally integrated department but has three distinct areas: Digital and Individual Giving is responsible for raising money from donors up to a single gift of £2,500. Activities mainly split into developing and upgrading existing donors on database and acquiring new donors through a variety of techniques and mechanisms, using both off line and on line techniques. All digital communications are lead and managed from DIG Donor Partnerships is responsible for raising money from wealthy individuals (£2,500 and above up and via partnerships with private trusts, foundations and companies. The Communications team manages all brand, external communication and media activities and works closely with all fundraising and marketing teams. They are all managed by the Director of Marketing and Communications. Merlin USA, a separate legal entity to Merlin UK, received a seed grant from Merlin UK in 2008 to help assist its fundraising outreach in the region.
Main purpose of the role
To ensure the successful engagement of Major Donors and High Profile Supporters in order to develop the major voluntary income stream for Merlin through securing individual gifts (£2,500 or more) from major donors, with a particular emphasis on the top end of donor portfolio (£100,000 +)
This will require the building and management of a Leadership Board consisting of predominately business and City contacts.
As 2013 is Merlin’s 20th anniversary year, we will also be looking to use our birthday to maximise support of the charity with new, existing and lapsed donors. This role will be responsible for leading the main focus of the year – the gala event in November 2013 with a focus on major donor, HPS and corporate support.
Overall Objectives (scope)
• Develop and implement the Major Donor and HPS strategy and operational plans. • Lead major gifts and high profile supporter 20th anniversary celebrations • To achieve the income targets necessary for Merlin to achieve its ambitious strategic plan. • To develop relationships with donors and potential donors and to elicit six and seven figure gifts either personally or working with the Chair, Trustees, Chief Executive and other directors. • To develop a Leadership Group to enable Merlin to continue to obtain significant gifts.
Responsibilities
• To develop relationships with existing and new donors, including donor field visits where appropriate • To elicit significant gifts either personally or working with the Chair, Trustees, Chief Executive and other directors. • To achieve agreed income targets • To develop a Leadership Group of high level volunteers to drive fundraising from their networks
• To work closely with Merlin Patrons and where appropriate use events in donor cultivation • To develop the Fundraising Case for Support for high level donors • To work closely with Merlin’s consultant in the field of relationship fundraising, the Major Donor and Events Team and Partnership Fundraising team to ensure a seamless service to donors. • Part of Marketing and Communications Senior Management Team that works with Director to agree key strategic and operational requirements. • Conduct regular monitoring, analysis and evaluation of the Major Donor programme; provide reports/presentations to Directors Group and Trustees, as required. • Work with Programmes to ensure that there is timely and high quality reporting to major donors on how their donations have been spent; this will include face to face reports by programme staff. • To offer support for ensuring an efficient and up to date internal process of gathering cross organisational strategic, technical, programmatic priorities and related funding needs and to the continued development a filing/knowledge management system that pulls together all funding proposals, reports and other related internal or external communications and materials to be used for all target audiences in UK, USA, new markets and in-country. • Responsible for reconciling and reporting monthly major donor income which is used to produce management accounts, and which the organisation uses to form decisions on programme expenditure, operational planning and risk. • Provide a High Profile Supporter service to support the activities of the Development Office and the Marketing and Communications team. • Work closely with the Individual Giving Team to identify major donors amongst IG donors and develop joint cultivation plans as part of the Supporter Journey. • Develop a Case for Support for Major Donor fundraising including fundable packages • Stay abreast of current and upcoming sector trends and techniques for Major Donor fundraising. • Manage the Major Donor and Events team to achieve the team targets and ensure individuals meet their objectives
To undertake all other reasonable tasks appropriate to the role and as required by the Director of Marketing and Communications.

• Responsible for significant donor and potential donor relationships • Represent Merlin, with donors, potential donors and in high level networks
• Signing off content in fundraising communications to significant donors • Budgetary control and authority
