Policy Advisor/Labour Market Economist - CBI - The Confederation of British Industry


Role Summary
This role combines economic analysis of the labour market with policy development and lobbying work on employment issues. It provides an excellent opportunity for an economics graduate to combine their analytical and presentational skills with working on the key labour market issues of the day in an organisation with a high public profile.
In this role, the post holder will analyse and interpret the operation of the UK labour market and help to develop business-friendly policy solutions with the aim of shaping government policy in ways which support the performance of the UK economy. They will possess a strong understanding of and interest in labour market economics and its application to broader policy development. They will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of labour market issues, present economic arguments in a concise, rigorous manner, and use economic statistics in an effective and appropriate way.
Key Responsibilities
  • play a strong role in supporting the CBI’s position on labour market developments by analysing and updating the management team on key issues;
  • work effectively with colleagues across the business and CBI members, including effective member involvement in policy formation;
  • work with colleagues to develop policy proposals based on sound economic justification (this may involve work with colleagues outside the directorate);
  • monitor and collate key national and international labour market data for CBI use;
  • make a significant contribution to the CBI's work on pay, unemployment and welfare reform;
  • conduct data analysis, research, and input to reports on economics and employment issues, including producing the CBI’s monthly labour market update;
  • build and develop good external contacts with relevant officials, business people and other stakeholders.
Person Profile
Knowledge & Experience
  • Ideally some relevant post-graduation experience;
  • Ideally possess a strong interest in both the labour market and the application of economics to policy-making.
