Department

BBC Radio Solent is the South's original local radio station. On air for over forty years with an audience passionate about local issues and where they live. We know it's the best part of Britain, and it’s a patch that exudes stories. Part of our ability to be a truly local station, is having a base in West Dorset. We are now in a lucky position to be able to extend our team based in Dorchester, and launch a brand new weekday breakfast show on 103.8 FM.

Role

Critical to the success of this new breakfast show, is its Producer. This role requires a Senior Broadcast Journalist with the drive to deliver West Dorset’s big stories with rigour and ambition, but also the creativity and lightness of touch to understand the full range of issues in that part of our patch. Leading a newly formed small team you’ll be expected to lead by example, whilst enthusing them to the highest quality editorial and production values. Answering to the Managing Editor, you’ll sit as part of a wider south newsgathering operation ensuring your colleagues in Southampton are fully across the stories making headlines in West Dorset. You’ll be confident enough to lead your small team to deliver great output in our small, but perfectly formed, Dorchester office knowing that the support of the regional hub is always available to you.

Requirements

This exciting opportunity requires the successful candidate to have a strong background in radio programme production. You could be a current breakfast producer looking to hone your skills further, or an established broadcast journalist working in a newsroom looking to make the move into management. You’ll have experience of making tough editorial decisions and a clear understanding of the needs, hopes and concerns of the BBC local radio audience and of the broad agenda that informs our programmes. You'll have a strong understanding of the BBC's editorial guidelines and values, along with an ability to uphold them. Based in Dorchester, you'll have (or have the aptitude to gain) a thorough knowledge of the 103.8 FM service area.
