Department

The Factual & Music department is a large, bi-media department within BBC Cymru Wales. The network radio team produces around 500 hours of programmes in total each year for Radio 3 and 4 and occasionally other networks. We are seeking an Executive Producer with a passion for classical music who will take responsibility for our music output on Radio 3, which comprises three major returning strands, Composer of the Week, Discovering Music and The Choir, plus big events such as BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, BBC Young Musician, operas from WNO and live music concerts from around Wales and the West Country.

Role

As Executive Producer you will take editorial responsibility for approximately 320 hours of originated programming each year for Radio 3. You will work closely with R3 Editors in Salford and London and be required to manage a range of relationships at a senior level in Radio 3. You will lead a team of producers in Cardiff, overseeing production of all Radio 3 output and taking an active role in the development of ideas and you will also occasionally be required to produce programmes yourself. Reporting to the Head of Factual & Music, you will be part of the senior team within the department and will be expected to contribute to broader management and editorial discussions and decision making.

Requirements

You will have a professional (or equivalent) musical qualification or substantial relevant experience together with detailed knowledge and experience of the Radio 3 schedule and audience, ideally as a programme maker.  You will have experience of producing music programmes in studios and at OBs, proven commitment to achieving the most efficient and cost effective use of programme resources and an ability to deliver programmes on budget. You will have a complete and demonstrable knowledge of radio production techniques and their use in a range of output, thorough knowledge of artists and repertoire and knowledge of musical issues and events.  You will have the ability to lead and motivate teams, to encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas and knowledge amongst team members. You will have sound editorial judgement, a thorough understanding of the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and a commitment to the editorial aims of the department, plus a working knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcast and online output.
