Environment:
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 34 States*.
ECMWF’s principal objectives are the development of numerical methods for medium‑range, monthly and seasonal weather forecasting; the preparation, on a regular basis, of these weather forecasts for distribution to the meteorological services of the Member States; scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts; and the collection and storage of appropriate meteorological data. ECMWF’s main computing facility includes supercomputers, archiving and data handling systems. ECMWF is connected to the meteorological telecommunication system and to its Member States via efficient networks linking 44 countries. A detailed description is available at:
This position will be located in the Communications Section within the Administration Department and the individual will report directly to the Head of the Communications Section.
Main duties:
The graphic designer will provide support to the users and the Communications Section in the production of written and graphical output for printed and web-based media.
This will include the origination of graphics to support the written word, as well as advising on the overall design, layout and style of publications, reports, web pages and promotional material.
The main duties of the post are:
  • Working with the Communications Section and other internal and external users to ensure that ECMWF publications are professionally presented and clearly communicated to their intended audience
  • Advising on the best use of text, graphics, layout and branding for the type of publication envisaged
  • Developing publications for a multi-media environment and ensuring that the output design fully utilises the specific characteristics of the various media to be used
  • Working with users to improve graphs and charts for submission to journals; this may include sourcing or creating photographic images used in ECMWF's literature, as well as creating original artwork
  • Ensuring that the ECMWF brand is fully developed and used in accordance with the guidelines in all output from the Centre.
Qualifications:
A degree in graphic design or a related discipline is highly desirable together with substantial experience of working independently in a graphic design-led role, with high level of user interaction. Experience in a meteorological or scientific environment would be a strong advantage.
Candidates should be proficient in Mac OS, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat and QuarkXpress. Experience in scientific and technical publications would be highly desirable with a full understanding of the web publishing process including a working knowledge of print and production processes. Some familiarity with 3-D modelling programs would also be desirable.
Candidates should be self-motivated with strong relationship management skills, combined with excellent writing and presentational skills.
The successful candidate should have a flexible approach as this post will require working to agreed deadlines, often under pressure with strict style guidelines. He or she must bring innovation and creativity to this role with the capability of implementing new technology in the delivery of their output.
The working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and a good knowledge of one of the other working languages would be desirable. Interviews will be conducted in English.
Staff are normally recruited from among the nationals of the Member States and Co‑operating States.
Remuneration:
The successful candidate will be recruited at the B5 grade and the annual basic salary will be £43,226.40 net of tax.

Maximum of four years for initial contract, with the possibility of renewal.
