PhD studentship at the Stockholm Resilience Centre

PhD studentship at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. Ref.nr SU FV-0977-13. Deadline for applications: 2013-05-02.
The mission of the Stockholm Resilience Centre is to advance research for biosphere stewardship and innovation. Research at the SRC applies a social-ecological systems perspective and resilience thinking to generate knowledge and understanding to enable social-ecological transformations towards sustainable futures. Research is advanced through transdisciplinary collaboration with international leading researchers, research environments worldwide, and environmental actors.

The SRC aims to foster new generations of researchers and academic leaders through our Resilience Research School that integrates young scientists within the research themes of the centre to create new approaches, insights and tools for biosphere stewardship and innovation. The school equips students with a theoretical and practical foundation in Sustainability Science with a resilience focus. It encourages students to develop new approaches that integrate methods and concepts from the social, natural and applied sciences. Emphasis is placed on developing student ability to define a problem, develop research methods, and communicate research findings within international scientific and science-policy discussions.

The PhD programme ends with a licentiate or doctoral degree..

Project title
Analyzing ecosystem services in the Norrström basin

Project description
Increasing social and scientific interest in managing ecosystem services requires a better understanding of how multiple ecosystem services are co-produced by social and ecological factors. This project will focus on assessing whether social-ecological interactions produce reasonably coherent sets of ecosystem services or bundles in the Norrström drainage basin surrounding Stockholm, Sweden

This project aims to
  1. develop methods to identify and analyze bundles of ecosystem services across socially relevant units in Sweden, based on publically available data such as census and GIS data, across the Stockholm region within local municipalities (kommuner)
  2. analyse drivers of social, ecological and geographic drivers of ecosystem service change across the region
  3. develop scenarios of possible future ecosystem services for this region
  4. compare these methods and results to those developed by other regional social-ecological assessments of ecosystem services
The Norrström drainage basin in Sweden covers 22, 650 square kilometres and spans urban, agricultural, forest and wetland landscapes and includes two of Sweden’s largest lakes, Lake Mälaren and Lake Hjälmaren. The capital of Sweden, Stockholm, is situated in the Norrström area, and the region as a whole is the most densely populated in the country.
This project will be strongly linked with Ekoklim - a large transdisciplinary research project (hosted by Stockholm University) that addresses issues concerning climate change effects on biodiversity, essential ecosystem services and their governance and management.

Furthermore, the methods and results this project develops will contribute to the recently launched ICSU-sponsored, global research initiative Program on Ecosystem Change and Society, PECS, www.pecs-science.org, which focuses on the social-ecological dynamics of ecosystem services.
The PhD student will supervised by Dr Albert Norström and Professor Garry Peterson, www.stockholmresilience.org.

Eligibility
Basic eligibility requires a degree at advanced level, completion of at least 240 credits of courses, including 60 credits at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge.
If the applicant has fulfilled earlier requirements for general eligibility before 1 July 2007, i.e. at least 180 credits, or the equivalent, then this eligibility is valid until the end of June 2015.

Specific entry requirements for admission to postgraduate studies in Sustainability Science are that the applicant has a total of at least 30 credits, or equivalent, at advanced level in natural science, as well as a thesis of at least 30 credits at advanced level in a relevant subject, or equivalent knowledge.
A graduate student may only be employed if admitted to doctoral studies at a university. Selection for employment as PhD student will be primarily based on the applicant’s ability to benefit from postgraduate level studies.

Selection
Selection of applicants is based on the applicant’s ability to benefit from the research studies. The assessment criteria applied for the selection are:
  • Subject knowledge relevant to the research task,
  • Practical experience and knowledge relevant to the research task,
  • Knowledge of scientific theory and methodology,
  • Analytical skills, proven by scientific reports, essays, theses,
  • Applicant's personal references.
The ability to read Swedish as well as experience working with ecosystem services, GIS, and quantitative analysis are desired. This project requires the integration of social and ecological knowledge in a way that is societally relevant. Consequently, we expect that a successful candidate should be enthusiastic about conducting transdisciplinary research.
Admission regulations for postgraduate studies at Stockholm University are available at:
www.regelboken.su.se/pub/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1031&a=16354 (in Swedish).

Employment

The period of employment for a new graduate student is one year. The appointment may be renewed for up to two years. The total employment may not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral studies.
A person employed as a PhD student will primarily devote themselves to their studies at the graduate level, but may work a maximum of 20% with education, research and administration.

Please note that the decision on employment of a PhD student cannot be appealed.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace that is free from discrimination and provides equal opportunities for all.
