Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP – Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 - 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Services Branch/Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (UNEP), the intern will be required to undertake one or more of the following activities:
1. Social media website updating & maintenance;
2. Support BRS in managing social media tools and developing audio-visual tools;
3. Under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, assist in drafting and editing web content;
4. Under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, support in collecting and drafting content for communications and reporting, including the quarterly European Union ENTRP and BRS management reports;
5. Carry out topic-specific research and necessary consultations with subject experts.
6. Undertake any activity as requested by the Public Information Officer in the area of strategic communication and outreach;
7. Provide logistical and organisational support to BC OEWG-9, RC CRC-9 and SC POPRC-9;
8. Participate in relevant meetings, including the 2014 BC OEWG;
9. Under the supervision of the Programme Assistant, provide overall support to Conference Services team as needed;
10. Perform other relevant duties as required.
Outputs:
The incumbent will be expected to produce one or more of the following outputs:
Content material of the clearing house mechanism/websites updated weekly
3-5 new postings made to the Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions' social networks, including POPsSocial, BRS Conventions (Twitter) and Safe Planet Campaign Facebook pages per month
Moderate user groups relevant to the subsidiary bodes meetings
Support Secretariat exhibitions and side events
Support preparation of meeting registrations and lists of participants

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
be enrolled in:
a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Background in Political science / International relations preferred.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English and French is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
