About us
The Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, and its flagship project The New Climate Economy (NCE), were independently commissioned by 7 countries in 2013 to help governments, businesses and society make better-informed decisions on how to achieve economic and social development while also addressing climate change. The Commission is chaired by former President of Mexico Felipe Calderon and co-chaired by Lord Nicholas Stern.
The NCE Land Use Special Initiative is a new initiative that will look specifically to identify and catalyse action around a “produce-protect-prosper” approach to land use that can simultaneously lead to more inclusive and sustainable economic growth (“better growth”), enhanced climate mitigation and adaptation (“better climate”), and improved equity and distributional outcomes (“better lives”) relative to business-as-usual development.
The role will be based at the Overseas Development Institute - ODI (www.odi.org.uk) – which aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by bringing together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.
New Climate Economy and ODI are seeking a full time person to lead its global work programme through the NCE Special Initiative at Director level. This is an exciting, high profile position which will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to further develop their professional skills, leverage and build their networks, and engage with senior global leaders. The person will lead the development and delivery of the Special Initiative on Land Use, driving innovative research and analysis, and influencing the international debate through public affairs activities including publications, media engagement, speaking at conferences, and providing advice to governments and business at a senior level. The Director will be responsible for ensuring that the NCE Special Land Use Initiative research products provide leading-edge new insights of relevance to decision-makers, meet rigorous research standards and are delivered on time and to budget. The Director will be responsible for working with NCE colleagues and partners to ensure that the research is embedded within a strategic engagement and communications strategy in order to maximise impact. The successful applicant will join a world-class team of economists, policy and business experts and communications and engagement experts.
The role will provide policy advice and support public affairs programmes, broadly within the Institute’s overall strategy and with the aim of inspiring and informing policy. It will also involve leading policy research and advisory projects, generally cross-country and cross-institutional, engage with policymakers in research and advisory processes, and disseminate results.
About you
  • Extensive experience demonstrating world-class and deep knowledge of relevant issues and organisations, with experience working in international institutions preferred.
  • Extensive experience in programme management, including in senior management roles, providing intellectual and managerial leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate across teams and research partners in multiple countries.
  • Detail-oriented and organized thinker who can juggle multiple, competing priorities.
  • Ability to travel overseas often, as required.
  • A strong personal record in the relevant field including publications
  • Proven ability to fundraise and build programmes of work
  • Demonstrated capacity for policy advisory and/or public affairs work, based on an analytical approach
  • Experience working in different countries and across a variety of cultures preferred.
  • Experience managing programmes across multiple departments and/or institutes preferred.
