Agricultural Research Council Jobs

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC-Small Grain Institute (ARC-SGI) seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic people to the following positions:

Bethlehem, Free State
Research Technician: Production Systems

Key performance areas:

  • Timeously compile trial plans for the relevant programmes with the correct entries for the specific areas
  • Supervise the preparation and packing of trials in separate replications
  • Determine trial’s plant components at the desirable stages
  • Weigh and determine hectolitre mass and grain moisture on all samples entering the laboratory from the trial sites of the various trials to be ready for report to the National Cultivar Evaluation Committee
  • Be responsible for financial processes, including budgeting and budget control of the seeding density and planting date trial on an ongoing basis
  • Interpret research results on scientific principles on a continuous basis to assist in decision-making towards the next season’s seeding rate and planting date trial
  • Write reports on the abovementioned results
  • Manage human resources allocated to the project on a continuous basis, including personnel evaluation

Requirements:

  • A National Diploma/BTech/BSc Agric degree
  • 2 years’ job-related experience in conducting field trials
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal)

Research Technician: Production Systems

Key performance areas:
• Organise local farmers’ days at research stations and at other sites, from time to time
• Manage the personnel and finances of the projects
• Be responsible for the fixed asset and motor vehicles register
• Maintain and utilise machinery and equipment utilised in the research programme

Requirements:
• A National Diploma/BTech/BSc in Agriculture
• 5 years’ job-related experience in conducting field trials
• Computer literacy and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
• Good communication skills (written and verbal)

Bethlehem, Free State
Researcher: Research and Development

Key performance areas:

  • Conduct field trials according to the business plan of ARC-SGI
  • Independently manage own projects, which includes appropriate experimental design, exercising control over financial and other resources, execution of trials and project reporting
  • Participate in and oversee all activities with regard to the execution of trials, which include the processes of planning, planting, maintenance and harvesting, and processing of samples
  • Take responsibility for all measurements and data acquisition on trials, including data capturing
  • Perform statistical analysis of data (Genstats) and prepare figures and graphs for report writing and publications
  • Interpret results in clear written text to be used in reports, presentations and publications
  • Present findings at congresses, field days and lectures
  • Publish own results (scientific and popular articles) as well as develop talks in the particular field of expertise
  • Develop proposals to be submitted for approval and funding of new projects

Requirements:

  • PhD/MSc in Agronomy and/or Soil Science
  • 3 years’ experience in experimental research, including planning, execution, data collection, entry, analysis and interpretation
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, communication, decision-making, problemsolving and administrative skills
  • Above-average writing skills and the ability to produce quality reports, research papers and popular articles
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and statistical packages
  • A valid Code EB driver’s licence

Senior Researcher/Researcher: Agronomy and Soil Science

Key performance areas:
  • Identify, lead and manage projects with potential for increasing small grain production
  • Coordinate the activities of projects that are already in existence
  • Compile quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports, as well as articles for publication in different popular and scientific journals/magazines
  • Ensure that allocated personnel are trained, optimally utilised and evaluated to contribute to the success of the organisation
  • Draw up and manage the budget in a costeffective and proactive manner
  • Ensure correct and timeously executed financial administrative activities/tasks
  • Successfully market and promote the institute’s services/products to relevant roleplayers
  • Ensure cost-effective maintenance and utilisation of infrastructure and equipment
  • Ensure the promotion and successful transfer of technology
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations/procedures
  • Network with national and international clients and stakeholders

Requirements:

  • Senior Researcher
  • PhD in Agronomy and/or Soil Science
  • 10 years’ applicable experience in the discipline
  • In-depth knowledge of small grain production in South Africa
  • Good interpersonal, analytical, decisionmaking, problem-solving, leadership and administrative skills
  • Proven computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office, and other statistical packages
  • Researcher
  • PhD/MSc in Agronomy and/or Soil Science
  • 5 years’ applicable experience in the discipline
  • In-depth knowledge of small grain production in South Africa
  • Good interpersonal, analytical, decisionmaking, problem-solving, leadership and administrative skills
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and other statistical packages.
