Campaigns Manager ONE

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organisation backed by over two and a half million people from around the world who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for the promises made to the poorest, and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid and trade reform. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency so these resources can be effectively deployed. ONE has offices in Abuja, Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, Paris and Washington DC.

We are looking for a Campaigns Manager to start up our mobilisation campaigns in Brussels targeting key decision makers, building our engagement with volunteers and ONE members in Brussels and in other key strategic EU countries, around our key issues including the EU Multi Financial Framework (MFF). This is a new role for an entrepreneurial and creative campaigner with a strong work ethic, and commitment to ONE’s cause. The successful candidate will be an energetic and enthusiastic team player with experience of working within a communications, advocacy or campaigning environment. Knowledge of Africa and international development issues would be a plus.

Reports to: Brussels Director

Location: Brussels, with occasional international travel

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage the development of creative and high impact campaigns within Brussels, building demonstrations of public support for ONE’s policy change objectives to policymakers and media in Brussels;
  • Work with colleagues to develop and execute campaigns for countries in which ONE does not have an office (e.g. EU Presidency countries, key countries blocking or supporting key decision making processes) in conjunction with local NGOs and ONE members;
  • Lead on overall activist relationship management in Brussels, engaging with ONE members and volunteers online and in person, to build strong activist groups, and implement media stunts and events;
  • Work with the Europe and US based campaigns and digital teams to coordinate and draft campaigns content (particularly online) which encourage people to get involved and take action, supporting the wider campaigns team with the execution of EU and global campaigns in Brussels and other European countries as appropriate;
  • Participate in crafting strategy for engaging ONE members and the general public in the fight against poverty;
  • Write emails, blog posts, and web content encouraging ONE members to take action;
  • Use social media to engage with ONE members and the wider public;
  • Any other duties as appropriate to the role.

Skills and competence required for the role (candidates should demonstrate how their experience meets these in their application):

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to write persuasive material, especially for the web;
  • The ability to work effectively and sensitively with a wide range of NGOs and other partners;
  • Proven ability to develop effective professional partnerships and relationships;
  • Proven experience of public organizing and volunteer/activist management;
  • Strong understanding of social media and its use in public mobilisation;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Flexibility to respond to a fast-changing work environment with shifting deadlines;
  • An understanding of development issues affecting Africa and a strong commitment to ONE’s mission is desirable;
  • Familiarity with Brussels processes and European politics;
  • Familiarity with HTML and CSS a plus but not required;
  • Experience of working within a campaigns, advocacy or communications environment;
  • Experience of project management and organising events;
  • Ability and willingness to travel if required;
  • Excellent written and oral English essential French and other languages highly desirable;
  • Patience and a sense of humour.
