Supervisor: Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer Directorate: Peace and Security Directorate Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
2. Job Purpose:
Under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer, the
Child Protection Officer will be responsible for ensuring a coherent, comprehensive response by the key protection actors, including UN agencies and through the Protection Working Groups, the broader humanitarian community, relevant TFG authorities and other parts of the Mission. In addition, the Child Protection Officer will be responsible for investigating serious abuses of children’s rights as well as overseeing the planning and implementation of AMISOM child protection programmes and Activities in Mogadishu, Somalia.
3. Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide technical advice and support to AMISOM leadership in the planning, coordination and implementation of child protection programmes and activities.
2. Facilitate capacity building activities to local NGO involved in implementing various programmes and activities on child protection.
3. Establish and strengthen partnerships with partners to enhance visibility of child protection activities.
4. Maintain contact with relevant local and international organizations working on child protection issues and other related activities.
5. Organize and participate in review meetings and field visits to monitor and evaluate progress in implementation of child protection activities.
6. Promote the quality of rights-based child protection programmes.
7. Interact with Transitional Federal Government (TFG) officials and other partners in the different stages of programmes/projects implementation to follow up on agreements and recommendations on child protection programme goals.
8. Prepare and submit detailed monthly reports on the implementation of various programmes and activities on child protection.
9. Any other duties as may be assigned.
4. Qualifications:
Advanced University Degree preferably in Humanitarian Affairs, Social Science,Law, Development Studies or other relevant field.
5. Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in Humanitarian Affairs, Human Rights, Child Protection, Emergency Preparedness, Crisis/Emergency Relief Management, Rehabilitation and Development, or other related Social Science areas.
6. Skills and Competencies:
• Candidates should demonstrate the abilities to:
• Good analytical, negotiating, communication and advocacy skills.
• Knowledge of the latest developments and technology in related fields.
• Leadership and teamwork abilities.
• Set high standards for quality of work and consistently achieves projects goals.
• Translate strategic directions into plans and objectives.
• Work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
• Quickly builds good and effective network of individual ability to coordinate group activities.
• Excellent communication and report writing skills.
7. Language requirement: Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages is a requirement; Knowledge of one or more of the other AU working languages would be an added advantage.
8. Age requirement: Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.
9. Tenure of Appointment:
The appointment will be for an initial period of one (1) year renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of fund.
