Economist - Biosecurity Focus

CSIRO is seeking a motivated economist to join the Social and Economic Sciences Research Program to design, conduct and publish original and innovative research on biosecurity issues and risk analysis. The position is a leadership role in a small, but growing, team of social and economic scientists working in this area.

Specifically you will:


  • Conceive, design, conduct and deliver cutting edge economics research addressing biosecurity issues, leading to effective outcomes;
  • Publish high quality scientific publications, through peer reviewed journals, book chapters and presenting material at conferences and workshops;
  • Provide scientific leadership and guidance to research projects and provide theoretical and methodological leadership in the development of new research to meet CSIRO strategic priorities;
  • Contribute to a dynamic, innovative and effective research team.
Location: Canberra, ACT

Salary: $99K-$132K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will have:


  • A PhD in a relevant field of economics e.g. natural resource economics.
  • Experience in the application of economic theories and analytic methods pertinent to biosecurity, preferably in the context of cross-disciplinary project teams.
  • Demonstrated track record in research design, management and delivery, including publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • Ability to effectively engage with internal CSIRO clients and external clients - research agencies, government and industry partners - to negotiate, design and conduct research.
