Summary

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

EMBL is seeking a Project Officer for the European research infrastructure project, “Euro-BioImaging - Research Infrastructure for Imaging Technologies in Biological and Biomedical Sciences”.

In the framework of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI, www.cordis.europa.eu/esfri), the Euro-BioImaging project develops a plan for a pan-European research infrastructure that provides access to imaging technologies across the full scale of biological and medical applications. The Euro-BioImaging consortium comprises 39 Beneficiaries and more than 250 Associated Partners from 26 Member States and Associated Countries. The ESFRI Preparatory Phase project Euro-BioImaging is financed by the EC - FP7 and is coordinated by EMBL.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Euro-BioImaging Scientific Coordinator and Project Manager at EMBL. The major task of the Project Officer is to assist the Euro-BioImaging project management with particular emphasis on communication and coordination of activities within the growing network of Euro-BioImaging Stakeholders:

  • Dissemination of information to Euro-BioImaging partners, stakeholders, and the general public;
  • Design, maintenance and regular updating of the Euro-BioImaging website;
  • Assemble briefing materials, organize meetings and visits, prepare reports;
  • Effective planning of the management tasks including drawing up efficient work plans and Gantt charts;
  • Proactively drive the communication and inter-personal relationships within the Consortium;
  • Preparation and presentation of reports and deliverables to tight timelines;
  • Provide the Project Manager with key project information throughout the life of the project;
  • Organize and minute teleconferences, meetings and workshops.

Close interactions with the participating partner institutions and European funding organizations will be required. Knowledge of contemporary science policy issues would be desirable.

Qualifications and Experience

The candidate should have effective organizational skills and enjoy working in an independent and pro-active manner as well as working in a team, across a broad range of functions and with maximum flexibility in a dynamic environment. Effective multi-tasking and the ability to work with tight deadlines are also required. Demonstrated experience in preparation and/or management of research networks on the national or European level is an advantage. The candidate needs to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to move between the scientific and managerial level. A high standard of written and spoken English is mandatory, German would be a plus.

The candidate should hold an advanced university degree in life sciences (PhD required), international relations or international law.
