FAO leads international efforts to fight hunger and achieve food security for all. The Organization is looking for an exceptional individual to head its Department of Economic and Social Development at its headquarters in Rome, Italy.

As the Organization’s Chief Economist and Social Scientist, the Assistant Director-General advises, in consultation with the Deputy Director-General (Knowledge), the Director-General and the FAO Governing Bodies on all matters of policy pertaining to the economic and social dimensions of hunger, food security and agricultural and rural development. In this respect, he/she will be responsible for promoting FAO’s role as the foremost authoritative source of standards and methods on agricultural policies and economic development, gender, equity and rural employment, statistics, and trade and markets.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Interested candidates should possess an advanced University Degree in economics, social sciences and/or related disciplines (Ph.D. or equivalent preferred); at least 15-20 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the economic and social analysis of development issues, including field experience on issues relevant to the post, and a proven publication record including in peer-reviewed outlets. Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and a limited knowledge of at least one of the other languages of the Organization.
