The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is at the cutting edge of genetic research with very large scale DNA data production & analysis underpinning the science. This relies heavily on our large-scale high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure which is amongst the largest globally & is possibly the largest Life Science data centre in Europe.

We are now looking to recruit an outstanding operational manager to drive the delivery of our ICT services to the Institute and the broader campus.

You will lead our ICT Services Groups comprising of a number of teams supporting the core ICT services. You will be responsible for all operational customer-facing services such as Desktop Support, Helpdesk, telecommunications and the ongoing development of the Corporate Services ICT group.

Reporting to the Director of ICT & working in collaboration with the Head of Scientific Computing you will be involved in developing ICT Strategy, budget management, development of excellent customer facing relationships & delivery of high quality customer focused services. You will liaise at all levels of the Institute & across campus & be responsible for managing resources effectively & appropriately to deliver solutions in a timely fashion.

Working closely with the Head of Scientific Computing you will coordinate the overall operational ICT requirements of the Institute & campus.

As part of the long-term succession plan for the Director of ICT role this is an excellent development opportunity for someone who sees their next role as leading a service delivering ICT services & managing a large scale high performance compute facility in a world leading scientific organisation.

Essential Skills

You will be a self-starter, able to work under pressure & will have expert communication skills to write/prepare & present proposals. You will have experience of collaborating with a broad range of different specialists, influencing senior staff & at Board level.

You will have an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the art technologies e.g. unified communications, wireless & LAN technologies, security, Linux, Windows, MAC systems & Helpdesk & ERP service systems. Awareness of emerging technologies such as cloud computing & hosted services & an in depth knowledge of SOPS, SLAs, BCP, project planning & management, budget & procurement management is required.

You will be able to demonstrate high levels of strategic thinking, long-term vision & excellent managerial skills that will enable you to develop, motivate & lead the ICT core group of technical specialists & a proven track record of successfully managing teams in a large enterprise, ideally within a scientific or research environment & an understanding of the importance of delivering a high quality customer focused service provision.

Ideal Skills

Ideally, to enhance collaboration with the Head of Scientific Computing you will have a broad understanding of wide-area networking, large-scale storage, SANS, database, enterprise infrastructures, web & clustered (farm) & distributed computing.
