Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
EMBL is seeking an online communications officer who will be responsible for updating, organising and developing content for the EMBL websites. You will join the communications team at EMBL Heidelberg which is responsible for the international communication and outreach activities of the Laboratory. Reporting to the Head of Communications and in collaboration with the web designer, other communication team members and the IT services group, the post holder will focus on the following duties:
- Take day-to-day responsibility for updating, editing and structuring content of the EMBL websites and special microsites using a Content Management System (CMS);
- Supporting and training the in-house editors of the CMS;
- Maintaining of web-related databases and coordinate periodic updates;
- Interacting with staff to collect information and lead the development and implementation of new content;
- Interacting with the in-house IT web developer and external IT consultants to enhance existing functionalities and establish new tools;
- Identifying opportunities and making recommendations regarding appropriate platforms and tools to best meet the organisation’s online needs, and ensure ongoing viability.
The ideal candidate will keep abreast of the latest web and online communication trends. He / she will research, implement, and leverage, as appropriate, new and existing technologies to support the organisation's mission.
Qualifications and Experience
We’re seeking a university graduate with first experience in web editing and communications. Experience in writing and editing and graphical skills together with a knowledge of how to use a content management system are required. Basic knowledge of HTML, Dreamweaver and Photoshop are also essential. Applicants should have an excellent command of English and preferably some experience in an international environment. The successful candidate should have the ability to liaise with a diverse range of people and personalities, is expected to be self-motivated and have outstanding communication skills. We expect flexibility and the willingness to take on a variety of tasks.
