Senior Systems Administrator Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute - Storage & Backups Team, a part of the wider Sanger Systems Support Group
Salary range £27589 to £38067 dependent on experience
Closing date for applications - 20th April 2012
A position has become available within the Storage & Backups Team, a part of the wider Sanger Systems Support Group, which will suit an enthusiastic, experienced Senior Systems Administrator with a proven track record. The Team has the job of specifying, implementing and managing one of the largest storage real estates in the UK, in support of world-leading scientific research, carried out on one of the largest HPC facilities in the country. Scale and efficiency are our biggest challenges.
Essential Skills
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their detailed knowledge of Unix/Linux systems administration skills, and will have the ability to apply these to a large scale environment. A strong base knowledge of storage systems is obviously a must have, along with detailed knowledge of how such systems form a part of a greater whole. They must be a good communicator, since communication with colleagues, suppliers, and world-leading scientists who are not necessarily computing experts is an important part of our role.
Ideal Skills
Knowledge of industry standard large scale backup solutions and other ways of securing data is a big plus, along with knowledge of a wide variety of different vendors' NAS systems - their management interfaces, performance characteristics, and measurement of the latter. Knowledge of large, high performance networks helps to complete a global systems view. The ability to manage projects effectively will help in dealing with the rapidly evolving environment that is IT at Sanger.
Other information
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute leads the world in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding the role of genomes in biological systems. These activities are supported by a large Genome Informatics infrastructure, which in turn is provided on some of the largest computing facilities in the country.
