CONSULTANT: SURVEY DESIGNER

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
Economic empowerment is one of the priority areas of UN Women. UN Women works with Governments and multilateral partners (UNDP, ILO, World Bank, regional development banks) to promote women’s economic empowerment and increase their access to economic opportunities, especially for those who are most excluded.
In 2012, UN Women will develop and launch an online platform for women’s economic empowerment. The comprehensive and interactive knowledge management platform, Knowledge Gateway, seeks to respond to the demand for a multi-lingual and multidimensional platform on women’s economic empowerment to offer information solutions and networking opportunities for women entrepreneurs, practitioners, gender equality advocates and policy-makers from around the world to better share existing experience and good practices. The Gateway will increase availability of cutting-edge research and up-to-date information, data and knowledge on women’s economic empowerment, including on business and economic opportunities, to improve the lives of women and their communities. It will provide a mechanism for on-going learning and exchange among users on issues that are critical to advancing women’s economic empowerment. There has already been some background research done on existing portals in general and around economic empowerment in particular, and this work will build on that.
The consultant will work under the supervision of the Chief of Economic Empowerment Section.
