Organ:
The General Secretariat directs all the administrative and financial aspects of the Union's activities, including the implementation of the provisions of the administrative regulations on operational questions, the dissemination of information on telecommunication matters for operational and other purposes, the provision of legal advice to the Bureaux of the Union and the departments of the General Secretariat, logistic support to the Union's activities including conferences, the coordination of the work of the Union with other international organizations, the dissemination of information to the Member States and Sector Members, press, corporate and individual users of telecommunications and the general public. The General Secretariat is also responsible for the organization of world telecommunication exhibitions and forums.
Organization Unit:
Within the General Secretariat, the Information Services Department (IS) is the focal point for the ITU information technology infrastructure which includes standards, user support and training, communication services (postal mail, voice, image, video, data), network services (file, print and computing), information exchange services (messaging, database, document base), desktop services (office productivity tools), administrative applications and software development environments. The Information Services Department manages the physical, human and organizational resources needed to design, deploy, operate, maintain and support the ITU information infrastructure. It also represents ITU in inter-organization meetings and committees related to information technology management.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities of the Internship
The intern will support ongoing work in the Library and Archives Digitization Programme, focusing on a particular collection of historic documents. Under the direction of the Digital Collections Librarian, the incumbent will perform the following functions:
  • Participate in evaluating and organizing collections for digitization and developing collection-specific work plans
  • Prepare original documents for scanning and cataloguing
  • Perform image correction/editing and apply Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software as appropriate and required.
  • Perform quality control of digitized images using established procedures and standards
  • Ingest digital objects into the corporate repository (Documentum)
  • Record metadata as directed and prepare collection-level descriptions
  • Perform other duties as required.

    The expected result is a ready-to-publish collection of digitized documents for the History of ITU Portal (www.itu.int/history).

    This internship will focus on the Library and Archives Service's collection of historical telecommunications statistics published by ITU between 1871 and 1967.

  • Qualifications required
    Education:
    Preference will be given to students enrolled in library or archives courses. Internships are preferably open to undergraduate and/or graduate university students or junior professionals.
    Experience:
    Practical experience of library operations is desired but not required.
    Languages:
    Very good knowledge of English or French. Working knowledge of a second ITU official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) would be an advantage.
    Competencies:
    Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Professional.
    Familiarity with digital imaging processes is preferred, but not required.
    Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    Ability to work well with a variety of staff in a pleasant and professional manner.

    Please note that a non-remunerated Internship position at ITU does not carry the same "conditions of employment" as a Short Term or Fixed Term position. Mandatory medical insurance as well as accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the Interns or sponsoring institutions, including travel expenses if any.
