The role: Legal Counsel

As Corporate Counsel at Google, you work on the most exciting legal issues as disruptive technological innovations require creative and proactive legal guidance. You're part of a whip-smart group of in-house lawyers and the projects and cases you take on challenge you to think big and differently. You are collaborative -- ready to partner in initiatives that influence all aspects of the business and work with Googlers from all over the company. As an integrated part of the team, you proactively assess legal risks and advise on products that will not only move information into the 21st century, but move information law forward as well.

You'll play a vital role in our growing team by advising the company on a variety of Italian law matters, in particular on commercial matters. You're an Italian-qualified lawyer who comes with substantial professional experience in intellectual property and media law, either in-house or in an established law firm. You will draft and negotiate a wide variety of commercial agreements supporting Google's business in Italy and explain EU and Italian contract and commercial law issues to business and technical colleagues, taking their input to address their concerns during the negotiation process. You’re a hardworking, patient and an outstanding communicator, able to produce high-quality work in a flexible, fast-paced environment. Additionally, you'll collaborate with Google legal teams throughout Europe and the U.S., advising on the local legal issues arising from new products and services. A deep understanding of Google's business and the ability to think quickly and practically are essential attributes for this job.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft, negotiate and adapt under Italian law a wide variety of commercial agreements, including content licenses and strategic partnership agreements.
  • Develop expertise in a range of Google products and create strong business relationships with business clients in all European offices.
  • Advise management teams, EU and U.S. legal teams, Enterprise, Business Development, Advertising Sales, YouTube and other business clients on legal matters.
  • Respond promptly and reliably to internal and external requests for advice, specifically with regards to contracts, commercial regulations, IP, data protection, advertising and consumer protection under Italian and European law.
  • Advise members of the Google legal team and business colleagues on legal issues and risks, serve as a liaison with outside counsel on issues arising under local European laws.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BSc/LLB degree. In lieu of degree, relevant skills or equivalent experience.
  • Qualified lawyer in Italy (Avvocato) and professional experience with a law firm advising media and technology companies and/or in-house experience in this industry.
  • Written and oral fluency in Italian and English (you must be able to draft contracts in both languages).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree (LLM or equivalent) from an English or North American law school.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of contract, commercial, IP, IT, data protection and commercial law with experience drafting standard form agreements and negotiating contracts for technology and media clients.
  • Special focus on the sale of goods and services over the Internet (e-commerce).
  • Deep understanding of online technologies and services. Excellent knowledge of the Italian media and content-production industries, including its trade organizations, authors societies and collective rights management issues.
  • In-depth experience advising clients on structuring complex, high-value, multi-jurisdictional commercial deals.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad variety of matter. Willingness to travel. Hardworking, patient, strong negotiation and interpersonal skills and an outstanding communicator.
