Reports Officer, P-2, Bamako, Mali

Purpose

The conflict situation in the North of Mali continues to exacerbate larger food insecurity and nutrition crisis affecting 3.5 million people with more than half of the population being children. The lean season in Mali is putting vulnerable children at higher risk to slip into severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The estimated annual caseload of SAM in 2012 is 175,000 children under 5 years but with the current situation in the country, that number could rise to 220,000 in the worst case scenario. Due to UNICEF’s early preparation for response to the worsening food insecurity and associated nutrition crisis, the pipeline of WASH kits and Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) have been secured with increasing number of supplies coming and going into the country.

Humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in the North with continuous reports of movements of populations: 166,968 Malian refugees registered in Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Niger, and more than 150,000 IDPs in Mali with limited access to water and health services, education, protection and nutrition services. An estimated 480,000 people live in areas at risk of cholera.

In view of the above challenges, UNICEF Mali identifies the need to secure sufficient Human Resource capacity in order to develop and administer high profile emergency response within the country programme and recruit a reporting officer who will be responsible for the preparation of humanitarian analyses, Situational reports, internal and external updates and emergency information management in support of the overall office humanitarian assistance and country programme in fulfillment of the rights of children and women.
