Statistical Geneticist MRC International Nutrition Group

Location: London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London

Salary: £35,935 - £43,914 per annum

The MRC International Nutrition Group, embedded within the Nutrition and Public Health Intervention Research Unit (NPHIRU) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine supports research ranging from mechanisms to public health translation across 4 sub-programmes: nutritional immunity; prevention of micronutrient deficiencies; calcium and bone health; and nutrient-gene interactions. Research is predominantly based at the group's permanent rural field station in Keneba, MRC Laboratories, The Gambia, with additional studies in Tanzania, Kenya and Bangladesh.

We wish to appoint a Statistical Geneticist with strong bioinformatics skills to join the MRC International Nutrition Group (ING) based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

The appointed candidate will work on genetic and epigenetic data sets from both family- and population-based studies with a focus on African populations. This involves efficiently processing, analyzing and storing genetic data, employing variant calling and annotation software to custom, GWAS, exome and methylation array data. The candidate will apply and develop approaches aimed at streamlining pipelines to deal with the analyses and interpretation of genetic data.

The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of the following: statistical genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics, programming, and databases for the manipulation and analysis of large genetic epidemiology data sets. S/he will have demonstrated research experience, a good understanding of biology particularly genetics and/or nutrition, as well as excellent communication skills and written and spoken English.

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience on the MRC pay scale Band 3 (minimum £35,935 per annum), excellent holiday entitlement; membership of MRC final salary pension scheme and other benefits apply.
