DECC Gas and Electricity Markets Authority Chair

Gas and Electricity Markets Authority Chair The Gas & Electricity Markets Authority (GEMA) determines strategy, takes all major decisions and sets policy priorities for the work of Ofgem, Great Britain’s regulator of gas and electricity markets. These industries occupy a central position in our economy through their contribution to GDP. The energy sector faces significant challenges in the next few years. We need to tackle climate change and major investment is necessary to replace generating capacity and upgrade the grid. Ofgem will have a key role to play in ensuring this is done in a way that provides best value to consumers.

The Authority’s primary duty is to look after the interests of gas and electricity consumers, present and future, wherever appropriate, by promoting effective competition. It is also required to have regard to broader Government policies on relevant social and environmental issues, and the security of gas and electricity supply, within the framework of competitive energy markets. Increasingly, its work will focus on the implications for regulation in Great Britain of the development of EU energy policies in moves to create a single energy market. Ofgem also delivers a number of Government environmental programmes.
