Fairfood encourages food and beverage companies worldwide to address socio-economic and environmental sustainability issues within their supply chains. Director Global Policy & Advocacy
Based in Amsterdam

Purpose of the position
Strategically, Fairfood International uses its advocacy intervention actions to encourage transparency, innovation and change in policies and practices from Food & Beverage companies worldwide. The Director Global Policy & Advocacy will work closely with the Executive Director to further develop and manage the implementation of Fairfood International’s global advocacy strategy in such a way that it:
• Realizes Fairfood’s mission of facilitating change towards a fair and sustainable food & beverage industry
• Ensures significant positive changes in the lives of poor and vulnerable groups within food and beverage supply chains worldwide and the environment.
Department:
The Policy & Advocacy department is Fairfood’s new programs unit that will come into existence from the 1st of December 2012. The department is composed of multidisciplinary teams working on advocacy intervention actions across various regions of the world. The team is composed of two senior managers and more than 20 managers (both local and international); all lead by the Director Policy & Advocacy. The Director Policy & Advocacy reports directly to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities & Requirements:
1. Strategy formulation and implementation
The Director Policy & Advocacy is responsible for ensuring the proper formulation of Fairfood’s global advocacy and associated strategy. He / She is required to be an experienced and knowledgeable professional who must have a very strong background in sustainability and is fully up to date with the latest trends on global sustainability issues and best practices. The Director Policy & Advocacy is required to be an articulate and inspiring individual who is able to eloquently demonstrate how Fairfood’s advocacy policies will be implemented in practice to deliver the desired change impact.
2. Networking
The Director Policy & Advocacy position requires an engaging personality whose responsibility will be to make and keep contact with other sustainability professionals with the aim of developing strategic collaborative initiatives. He /She is required to be very comfortable in public speaking and must represent Fairfood International in professional events such as: lectures, seminars, conferences, and debates. The Director Advocacy must have an acute sense of where and when to engage opportunities for funding or collaboration with other parties and must strategically act upon them in collaboration with the Executive Director and the entire organisation.
3. Head of Department and staff management
The Director Policy & Advocacy is responsible for being as the head of his/her department. The position requires a talented and experienced manager who must carefully and correctly apply situational leadership in dealing with his/her team. The Director Policy & Advocacy is responsible for motivating his team by ensuring that the right amount of support and empowerment is given at all times. He / She must be approachable and must show good respect, empathy, and also exercise natural authority and decisiveness. The Director Policy & Advocacy is responsible for full ownership of the targets and the results of his/her department and must ensure that impact is achieved within budget and within agreed timeframes. The Director Policy & Advocacy is a member of Fairfood’s Management team.
4. Collaboration and delivering results
The Director Policy & Advocacy is responsible for ensuring that all Fairfood intervention results are maximized through intense and fruitful collaboration with the other departments at Fairfood and with Fairfood’s global strategic partners. The Director Policy & Advocacy must be result-driven and should foster a climate of teamwork and collaboration within his/her team and with external parties. The Director Policy & Advocacy takes ownership for the delivery of high quality, comprehensive and coherent results to the Executive Director on all given tasks.
Competences
- University degree or Masters on Sustainability or related discipline
- At least 12 years relevant work experience leading projects and managing employees most preferably, in an advocacy or campaigning organization
- Extensive international work experience and knowledge of the food industry and/or agriculture.
- Strong knowledge of the dynamics of NGO and Private sector relationship in the food industry. Good knowledge of corporate engagement and campaigning.
- Very strong strategic and analytical abilities
- Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams
- Strong networking and negotiation skills
- Proven ability to deliver results on time and within budget
- Excellent planning, monitoring, evaluating and reporting abilities
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly, nationally and internationally
- Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; other languages are plus.

Fairfood International remunerates its staff in line with industry standards, including an annual salary of € 54.520,-, an annual personal budget in lieu of pension of € 4.361,-and reimbursement of work-home travel.
